@Girtablulu I'm having the same issue as the OP, only your solution for dropping into TTY and running sudo eopkg up isn't repairing my DE. I'm worried that I might just have to wipe the drive and start again. Any advice before I do that?

Bhibb the usual stuff check for broken packages and reinstall them, re run usysconf fully think what happened before your reboot install/uninstall of packages

I checked for broken packages and nothing came up when I ran sudo eopkg check all things were nominal. That said, before I ran into this problem I had installed the wallpaper engine in our repo called Variety. Also, I had a strange UI glitch that I don't quite understand where the Budgie menu wouldn't show up when I hit the super. I thought something was wrong with the xserver so I (naively) ran some startx commands and probably corrupted my DE at that point.

I'll check usysconf to see what it has to report. Thanks for your assistance.

No luck. My jouranlctl command lists spice-vdagent as the first error in user mode, but my system copy of journalctl lists a lot of pcie dbus errors and I'm not sure what I'm looking for in all the noise. It also says I'm missing a lot of kernel messages 🙁 not sure what to think about that. Seems like Xauth doesn't have permission to access the files it needs, too, from what I'm seeing in the log. I've just been sudo eopkg it --reinstall <packagename> on anything I see like spice-vdagent or xauth but I'm still faced with the same problem. Lightdm works like a charm, just can't get into my Budgie DE.

sudo eopkg rdb might help. I've had no broken packages on CHECK before, still had problems, so did the RDB which found some things not broken, I guess, but needed rebuilding. And that took care of the problem. Which was different than your problem, but handled thru the tty all the same.

brent Thanks brent, I tried your advice, but rebuilding the packages didn't do the trick for me. I'm still stumped. When I run sudo lightdm I get the following output as well:
Failed to use bus name org.freedesktop.Displaymanager, do you have appropriate permissions?

And I'm not sure what that might mean.

minh I tried to run the commands as listed there, but more .xsession-errors returns nothing for me. Not sure if I'm just not in the right place or if I don't have any xsession errors to display.

brent Seems right, but now my lightdm is complaining that it doesn't have permisison to read .Xauthority in my home directory.

Bhibb things I'm reading (https://forum.manjaro.org/t/lightdm-failed-to-use-bus-name-org-freedesktop-displaymanager/22398 and https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1428379) after typing in your exact error message into search engine, seems to suggest starting and stopping a systemd/systemctl service(s) might work...the services thing seems consistent....but these are all different operating systems in my reading.
Out of my league here, I hope someone Core, or with the knowledge to repair this error, steps in to help you....

do some pointed searches on this forum, too. lightdm not an uncommon topic.

brent I've tried starting and stopping lightdm, reinstalled the package, but nothing is seeming to work.

minh I created a new user with the same permissions, but still nothing is working (I have both users still on the system).

I'm getting to the point where I might just nuke the drive and re-image. I have backups, thankfully, so recovering this drive is not critical.

Ended up nuking and paving for simplicity's sake. Thought I'd try out another beautiful Solus DE while I'm at it. Went from Budgie to KDE Plasma and I guess it all worked now. Never solved this issue, but thank you for your input.

I think a solution was in sight but you'd have to exhaust some avenues--days it's taken me sometimes. Wasn't my impression there was a quick and easy fix for that error.

Certainly is unsolved, but you seem happy and up and running and productive and that's the main thing.

brent Yes indeed! Thank you for your patience. Budgie is an addiction, that much is true. I'm glad there's support here for the fringe issues and screw-ups like me. I'm not sure how I feel about not having the Raven drawer to manage my audio. 😃
