chob-linux - An universal app search tool for Linux

Just found a new tool to search applications on Terminal.
chob-linux
Chob is an helper tool for searching application accross platforms (Flathub, Snapcraft and AppImage)
More details on github

I followed the instructions using the executable file, but added some more steps.
I placed it on my ~/.bin, marked it as executable and then added a new alias.
alias chob='chob-linux'
This work same as it was builded.

If you want to build it you can follow the instructions explained on github page.

I'm waiting for someone to come into this thread with a terminal command that will search all 3 platforms...
Kidding aside, nice job.
If your picture was a hypothetical, which Kdenlive would one choose? I can't imagine they'd be identical. Or would they?

brent You can try both, and see which one is faster. My personal first choise is AppImage. I can move them around as i want, and creating a menu entry when is not offered by the app, is not a problem.

No, nothing like that happens.
There is only one process chob-linux. During search need only around 50MB - 75of RAM (Stacer app report 25MB more RAM than Gnome System Monitor ).

When a number is chosen or CTRL+C to break the search, chob-linux proccess vanishes.

algent i could see 10 chob process running its almost 16% of RAM usage totally ...similar like google chrome...I thought npm is running behind all the time..

I don't know how top or htop works. I don't understand what (Virt) 799M means.
In my picture 1.6% of 4.58 GB or RAM equas 73.28 MB, as it is shown on Stacer almost.

I tried this again by opening multiple tabs on Gnome Terminal 12 exactly and on each of them is running chob.

You can see on stacer that, each one of them has it's own proccess.

If we belive at htop with that value on VIRT, one proces is 799MB, then 12 of them equal 9.6 GB, meanwhile my system is using only 2.28 GB.

Well seem that top and htop can't read properly memory size of chob-linux.

VIRT: Size in memory of the total program size.

This is that who matter i think. From last picture i see 74 in blue color and that is in MB I think.

RES: The resident set size, i.e. the size of the text and data sections, plus stack usage.

The lesson of the day would be to not write such software in JS, 50MB of RAM for a handful of HTTP requests is blasphemy.

ham is hitting the https://gitlab.com/buddyspencer/snap-repos everytime....

you can store all json in /tmp or any dir for first time using ham then access it multiple times from local..
refresh json for next day...ex: make json file name with appimage-04-06-2019.json.
check the date if its not today then refresh the json...

well I hate java. Had to much to do with it at the university...

What's wrong if it hits the repo everytime? It just does a pull to check if there is anything new.

buddyspencer Yes nobody try that lol. I always encounter Array index out of bound exception 🙁.
Nothing wrong for small applications.

I was thinking about unnecessary network access/traffic normally I try to reduce the network access using Proxy Design Pattern.

Maybe I will change it. I created the pipeline in the gitlab repo to get the current packages from the APIs, so it doesn't take like forever as if I get them directly.
