New issue today. I had locked the screen at the end of the day yesterday to let my system run some simulations overnight. When I unlocked this morning, budgie-panel was no longer running.

Where can I find logs in case this happens again?

infinitymdm Assuming the panel crashed, there should be a coredump. I think it needs to have the debug symbols installed at the time of the crash to be useful, though.

Run sudo coredumpctl gdb budgie-panel to view the latest coredump (assuming there is one).

Enter this into the prompt to redirect the output to a file:

    set logging file <path/to/file>
    set logging enabled
    thread apply all backtrace full

Press 'c' and "Enter" to show all test without scrolling or paging. The session is exited by typing q in the prompt and hitting Enter on your keyboard.

Then, upload the file to pastebin.com or your favorite pasting service, and post the link here.

I've jumped on the hype train and tried Budgie 10.10.
Tried my best to handle it for few hours, but way too many things are not working, bugged or just not feeling right.

To start how Ulauncher triggers a top "panel" (white strip), kando refused to start due missing Gnome extension, the built in Budgie Menu applet is not working at all... and etc.

presianbg I don't see any mention of wlroots or labwc in the Kando docs. It also sounds like it's incorrectly identifying Budgie as GNOME.

Can you elaborate on "Budgie Menu applet is not working at all"?

Again, something I just can't wrap my head around. Why go to all this trouble when we're switching to QT with v11 anyway? Why saddle a lame horse with such incredible effort? I don't understand it...

mkl Other distros are already signalling the end of concerted efforts with maintaining X11; that's the key reason. As time moves on, there will be less and less incentive to actually maintain the status quo. Magpie, Budgie's window manager, is forked from Mutter a few years ago - and we aren't maintaining it. It wouldn't be long before some component basically breaks things rather fundamentally. I'm only one person, and I have 0 idea on how that thing works. I would not be able to fix it if Solus continued to stay on 10.9.x.

We've only barely begun on Budgie 11. It's still a long ways off, so we were under the gun, as it were, to get something out there on Wayland.

EbonJaeger Looks like I didn't have debug symbols. Will install those and let you know if I get any future crashes. EDIT: Looks like I can't install budgie-desktop-dbginfo. Is that not provided in the testing repo?

Regarding Budgie Menu applet - i'm talking about the 3x3 dots icon menu:

Which on click opens the menu with categories and applications installed on the system.

On v10.10 this applet does not work at all - it just opens second icon (3x3 dots) and no categories, no app icons and the search does not work at all for me.

Ah. Right. It is not, because I don't build debug packages locally. Hrm :/

Still, looking at your dump, it looks like the weathershow applet from UbuntuBudgie crashed, and an applet crashing takes out the panel because it's all a single process.

This sounds a lot like the intermittent issues I've been having with Budgie menu:

infinitymdm Also having some very odd behavior from the budgie menu - it occasionally likes to pop up in pieces, with each element only appearing when I move my mouse over where it should be to trigger an update. Possibly nvidia related?

When this happens for you next, try moving your mouse over the place where the menu should be. If it's like what I'm having, when your mouse is over a menu item that item will be redrawn and appear to "pop" into existence.

For me, everything on the panel up to the width of the Budgie menu (so the menu icon plus my icon tasklist) gets duplicated and drawn onscreen where the menu should be. I've been noticing it less often since the most recent set of updates, but that might just be me subconsciously working around it.

focus and a field to type in are so necessary, so ingrained that between arch budgie testing and solus budgie testing I still cannot work around it or get used to not having it. I'm willing it back, too 🙂

Yeah, sounds like it.
I decided to revert to a backup before the v10.10 "experiment"... it was my main setup.
I will install a fresh Solus VM and test there.

Just an update regarding screen resolution, not a big deal, but when updating today to the latest version of Linux kernel 7.0.3 I noticed on first reboot the screen resolution was in that weird 680x480 or something similar, this time I didn't bother changing the screen resolution in budgie desktop, instead I just rebooted again and it came back to 3440x1440, So the conclusion is when updating the kernel, for me I have to reboot twice to get back the native resolution(3440x1440) in this case with a AMD RX 7800 XT gfx card.

I can confirm I am getting the same, Libreoffice when closed, the icon on the budgie taskbar still remains even tho the application is closed.
