Nick from "The Linux Experiment" channel ranked Solus in his yearly tier list

TL;DW is that for him Solus is a "No thanks": while he doesn't consider it bad, it just doesn't have "a main hook" for him.

I've been using Solus exclusively for a few years and I think his arguments against it are very weak. Comparing it to Arch Linux makes no sense to me and the point about having a small package repository doesn't really hold water because Flatpak exists and you can get just about everything you'd need from it.

What do you think? Please keep it civilized

I thought years ago during my distro hopping that stuff like that would lead me to the holy grail it didnt.
Because its based on objective views and it varies by all them.
So to me its what works for you and your happy with!
Its all Noise!
Thats what is nice about Linux you can try all this stuff out if you dont like something move on to the next
till you like something.

And alot of times trying to meld something into what it is not does not have the best outcome.

I think not having a "main hook" is a great selling point for Solus. We're not trying to fill a particular niche, just build a reliable desktop experience. That's hard to sensationalize as a content creator because it's not inherently exciting, so I understand why it's not high on their tier list or whatever.

I haven't watched that kind of stuff in ages, and I haven't read that garbage for years either. I test things out myself, form my own opinion, and make up my own mind. Then I decide and act accordingly.

TL;DR: I couldn't care less about that crap. What, Me Worry?.... 😉

I do enjoy his channel....mostly. I mean nothing is perfect, but its a nice listen and good production. Sometimes a bit too "america bad, europe good"....and his ego has enlarged lately too. But nevertheless, I enjoy relaxing or doing chores while listening to his weekly updates.

Solarmass Level1Techs content might be considered more 'advanced', it's at least more technical. I think they would be more likely to do a file system comparison than a distro comparison though. More results focused. They have a separate channel just for Linux.

As for Nick, he's never really seemed hooked by Solus or Budgie. I haven't heard him be disrespectful, though, so if someone wants to hate him, they'll have to hate the other 95+% of desktop Linux users who prefer something else as well, and that's just not healthy. 🙂

Tier lists never bother me. They are based on opinions and views. There is no such thing as a perfect distro for everyone, as we all have different ideas of what we want.

We have a curated repository, which is supplemented by flatpak, distrobox, appimages, etc. If I want, I have access to every package that you get with Ubuntu, Fedora, and Arch (including the AUR).

But as I started with, everyone has different ideas of what they want in a distro. If that was not the case we wouldn't have so many. Nick is actually a good guy. I dont agree with a lot of his takes, but he is a positive influencer and you really don't see as much in the way of click bait material from him.

As for TLE's ranking, I do think that many have a point of view that was created out of the rough patch Solus went through. There is also just not a lot of "marketing" from influencers. There is no "sexy" catch because it is a rolling distro that just works. Kind of hard to build headlines that way. Especially in the day and age of "gaming distros" being the rage. I do think some of the things that are coming, like changing the tooling, will generate more disucssion. Solus deserves a lot more credit than it gets, but it is hard to really get out in front of the "flavor of the month" desitros when you are a steady rolling distro that works well.
