Can i install budgie 10.10 on my solus instalation ?

The tile is self explanatory. I'm wanting to migrate from kde to budgie, but i wanted to continue using wayland, so this would be two questions: first one is in the title, the other one is "is it possible to use wayland in a normal installation of budgie ? Thanks you all in advance

Solus is a curated rolling release distro with focus on stability. The Solus Budgie maintainer (who is also a Budgie dev) has decided against shipping Budgie 10.10 for now since it isn't quite ready yet:

10.10 might make it's way to Solus in the coming weeks. No ETA's though.

it was an interesting read.
at the end of the day "6. Conclusion / Budgie 10.10 on Wayland in its current state is not suitable for daily use. There are significant functional gaps and regressions compared to Budgie 10.9 (X11). " as well as #5, identified issues. Good work

Hey pomon,

Did you test 10.10 against Steam gaming on Nvidia cards?

I'm quite concerned about significant performance degradations when using Wayland-based DEs for Steam gaming on modern Nvidia cards.
Worst case scenarios will include Steam games not starting up at all.

For most users, upgrading Budgie from 10.9 to 10.10 is an irreversible process, we don't want cases where we can't game anymore after a DE upgrade. I'm sure there are plenty of gamers here on Solus Budgie.

I know there are xWayland and such, but I don't have any first hand experiences of using such technologies and thus can't comment on how well it will work on my Budgie + Nvidia setup.

Excellent write-up. As an old dev, this is the kind of detailed feedback (good or bad) that we dream about from testers.

snowee I have not tried Budgie 10.10, but I game on a Budgie 10.9 (X) system and a Solus KDE (Wayland). The two systems are identical hardware, and the performance is the same since Steam uses XWaland when running inside Wayland by default. If I force Wayland mode on Steam, the performance is still the same for the most part, but there are certain things that are not quite ready yet, so I just use the default XWayland. The way Steam works, it should work the same out of the box by default.

OK-- for kicks I installed Budgie 10.10 Wayland when I updated Endeavour Cinnamon tonight. I've been in it for an hour.
I agree with your "unusable as of the moment" diagnosis. White titlebars were the least of my problems. I have a lengthy list but since this is a different distro I will save it. It should come with the "experimental" label in Endeavour just like Endeavour does for it's unusable Cinnamon Wayland.
It was an entire hour of misfires. I kept a fail list in pen, on a legal pad, as I did one normal thing after another.
I concede I installed it in Cinnamon and it's available in greeter and should have had a partition of it's own...but I wanted to see what it was like...and experience was similar to yours.
It'll get there eventually. But not now.

So I assume we can expect bug reports from you on the budgie-desktop issue tracker, right? 😉 After all, if it was just one misfire after another, surely that means there is plenty that needs to be done?

Hopefully the .1 will arrive in Arch sooner rather than later and you can check out that too.

I don't understand the fuss. They're releasing an unstable version 10.10 with many changes, while simultaneously burying the GTK era and making the next version Qt-based...

Perhaps someone can explain it to me. Maybe I'm just misunderstanding something here.
