Not NAS, but I've had a few DAS and the biggest headache is replacement parts and compatibility when something goes wrong. $100 for a fan? You've got to be kidding me.
Off the shelf parts means you can expand as your needs change without buying another unit, and there are plenty of online tutorials to walk you through parts selection and each of the steps.
