Which NAS to choose?

Hello. I'd like to install a NAS at home.
Which model should I choose?
I'm looking for a model that's easy to use, install, and performs well.
I saw the UGREEN DH 4300 Plus, but I don't know if it's compatible with Solus.

Hello,

I only use Synology because they were the market leaders at the time.
I have seen very positive reviews and tests of UGREEN.
On the Clubic comparison website (in French), it was voted best NAS 2025/2026.

Like all NAS devices, they are installed using a browser. From what I've seen of the installation, it's quite similar to what Synology does. So it will also work with Solus.

To use it with the file manager, you need to modify the fstab to access it.
This step is explained on their website. How to view NAS files in the manager with Linux. You will probably need to adapt it a little.

If I had to do it again or if mine broke, I would go to UGREEN.

A NAS, in effect? It has its reasons and advantages, no question.

But have you perhaps also considered a Nextcloud instance with a trustworthy provider for just a few euros/dollars a month?

It saves time and hassle. In the long run...

You can also build one yourself; it's a bit cheaper, but you need computer skills, which I don't have.
The DH 4200 Plus seems easy to install and use.
Can we trust this Chinese brand in the long term?

Just moved from Synology to Ugreen and have been happy. It doesn't have quite the repository of built-in apps, but is much more powerful and has a very solid VM and Docker manager, so running anything on it works great. Synology is stuck on 8-year-old processors and has become less customer-friendly in their actions. I do still have a couple of them I use for work, but they are being phased out.

Axios Had it since May. I am actually using their UGOS which is not as full featured, but getting better. However having solid Docker and VM management made up for that. The nice thing is that if you don't like UGOS you can install/use TrueNas or other NAS software and it does not void the warranty. But I have been happy. I have the DXP6800 Pro running my Plex, Home Assistant, Several VMs and Dockers in my lab.

I came by a dell server awhile back was going use it but geez its a power hog..lol
So never really did anything truenas ran great on it.
May sell it for a ugreen.
I got upgrade to passthrough disk controller and few other things so cost

Seconding rolling your own.

Not NAS, but I've had a few DAS and the biggest headache is replacement parts and compatibility when something goes wrong. $100 for a fan? You've got to be kidding me.

Off the shelf parts means you can expand as your needs change without buying another unit, and there are plenty of online tutorials to walk you through parts selection and each of the steps.
