Building a Package

Hi. I am trying to learn how to build a package in solus. Followed the instruction on Help Center/Building a Package.

Cloned common and setted up symlinks,

Next task is to go inside the folder of the package that I am building, and then run: echo "include ../Makefile.common" > Makefile.

At this point i need some help with an easy package even if it is in repo, just to learn how to package it.
What do you recommend?

algent Hi. Maybe take a look at the video tutorials Josh once made. I watched them yesterday and they are quite informative and contains some examples.

algent nano is relatively easy I believe, it's current tarball is https://www.nano-editor.org/dist/v4/nano-4.2.tar.xz

You can use the script in ~/.solus/common/Scripts/autopackage.py to make it even easier:

cd ~/.solus/
mkdir nano
cd nano
~/.solus/common/Scripts/autopackage.py https://www.nano-editor.org/dist/v4/nano-4.2.tar.xz

Now you can open package.yml in your favourite editor and fill in any blanks/required fields.

Then run make.

That's the easier part. Next comes dependencies, etc. Let us know if you get stuck.

In the beginning I would stick to upgrading in the beginning, to get a hang on the system

If that is easier then Ok. I will try that.
I thought building is the first step.

algent well building a package is more complicated then just upgrading an existing one, till you get the hang on it after nothing stops you from adding accepted package inclusions, but in general it's more important to keep stuff up to date then adding packages and stop maintaining them.

I built/compiled my first package last week. I give Justin all the credit. It was fulfilling. I'm going to write it into a proper tutorial another time for a future reader interested in the program. But it starts logically in the right directory then unpack the targz etc. Instructions are precise, more or less, and you can see a sequence. I learned a lot.

EDIT: P.S.--it obviously took me 2-3 tries...

The good thing when you start packaging is that you discover tons of stuff and you learn a lot, not only on how to build code but also on how applications work (many times I did package things then I had to figure out what it is and how it could be tested)

I tried last night with budgie-hastle-applet and the procces failed, but now i am starting again.

I have a question about this two commands in configuring git:

git config --global user.name "Your Name"
git config --global user.email example@email.com

I saw that in the video Josh didn't change them. Should I let them as they are or I should change them ?
For example
git config --global user.name "Your Name" with

Followed instructions in the video "Learn Solus Packaging - Session 4 (Beginners)" to build "budgie-haste-applet", but the build failed.

I noticed that there was something wrong my last snapshot of Timeshift. Later found why. There are two images in /var/lib/solbuild/images looks like they are in total 20.0 GB (but I don't think it is true size).

What I had to do is to exclude this folder in next snapshot.

So, if someone use solbuild and Timeshift have to keep in mind this.
