brent Had the power go out for about two weeks in town in the middle of winter. Stores out, gas out, and what you could buy was cash only. Took a bit for the cell batteries to finally give out, but the landline was still operational and I had a portable transistor radio.
With the landline, I could call my parents to check which motels were still operational in case I need to bail and get news. The radio allowed be gauge the edges of the outage and of course localized news.
My takeaways- buy more blankets. Buy a wind-up clock. If I ever run into a small windfall, get a wood-burning stove.
And friends. A hodgepodge network evolved for information sharing and checking up on each other so people could get what they needed without having to waste fuel checking directly.
And resiliency. The tech future may be a wonder for convenience, but absolutely falls apart for resiliency and doesn't seem to care.
