My first few days with Niri

So I installed it. It's fun to try out different shells with quickshell.

Sebastian Hello, the "Enter button" and "enter button icon" were not working when noctalia wanted to exit suspend/sleep mode. As someone who uses Suspend frequently, I stopped using noctalia out of necessity and continue on my way with waybar.

I wonder if you have the same problem? If not, it means that the problem is caused by me.

I can't tell yet. My config.kdl is set up for dms with dms specific shortcuts. Would need to spend some time first to set up noctalia specific shortcuts for a fair comparison in action.

Have you tried other shells as well?

I was thinking about a Solus + Niri + Noctilia setup, would be nice to have a minimal install of Solus so people could install a tiling window manager on a "clean slate", however that's not the case(for now) so do you have a recommendation on the base? I am thinking Budgie or XFCE, as I think these would be the easiest strip down before doing Niri install, but if you have had better experience on Plasma or Gnome as a base I am interested to know.

DrunkenAlcoholic I'd say the base doesn't really matter. I myself can give no advice in stripping the system down by removing DE packages. By doing so, you might run in some dependency issues. I am rather the other way round. I have a GNOME base system + Budgie installed + niri + hyprland installed.

Is what you mean that after returning from suspend the lock screen was shown and it wouldn't accept the password you entered? That I have experienced with dms and noctalia shell. This can be resolved by
this command:
sudo cp /usr/share/defaults/etc/pam.d/login /etc/pam.d/ && sudo cp /usr/share/defaults/etc/pam.d/system-auth /etc/pam.d/ && sudo cp /usr/share/defaults/etc/pam.d/system-local-login /etc/pam.d/ && sudo cp /usr/share/defaults/etc/pam.d/system-login /etc/pam.d/
and re-login.

Sebastian No, the problem was not with pam.

So the problem was not about me. (Because you have come across the same mistake.) I was wondering if I made a mistake somewhere. Thanks for the reply.

I did a thing. Huge, HUGE thank you to Sebastian and stocc. Y'all helped scratch the tinker's itch, and I'm adoring niri so far! EDIT: NOPE! LOVE IT EVEN MORE NOW, EVEN SETHSTORMS GREYSTONE ICONS TRANSLATED OVER! IT'S DAMN NEAR PERFECT, PARDON MY FRENCH.

ForumPheasant You’re welcome! I'm still loving my niri and DMS setup. It seems to work so well on my laptop with touchpad. I do keep wondering whether I should attempt to package DMS, but I feel a little daunted by the packaging instructions and so far haven't dipped my toe in the water...

stocc I bet on a laptop it's wonderful with the gestures and infinite scrolling! I appreciate the time you spent detailing the procedure on Solus, coupled with DMS's instructions it was fairly straightforward. Thankfully, most of the packages were already in the mainline repo, so now to play around and add some polish! If you package DMS, I'm sure it would be appreciated by someone somewhere down the line. I'd be pleased as punch to help test if that comes to pass. Hope you have a lovely day as well!
