Staudey Since I just saw this on Mastodon and found it funny and a good addition to my above point.

People might already be aware of this funny mistake the main X11Libre guy made, which perhaps is excusable on its own

EXCEPT he had already proposed those changes to X.org before, where a maintainer commented on this very same mistake

So he never corrected that issue, even though he had already been made aware of it, and when someone fixed it for him in his new fork he for some reason still didn't immediately get it.

Staudey My heart has always went out to the underdog, but this project has been an accidental comedy of errors since inception.
The only way he could make a run at surviving at all is to get massive funding (a la microsoft or other) and a team. The distros might pay attention.
Then again does any single party/person have anything to gain by competing against Wayland?

I would not disregard XLibre yet, rapid dev + years of fixes released all at once is a huge task, but doable.
Acessibility and Remote Support software are hell on Wayland...

BrunoBarroso These statements pique my curiosity. I've been hearing them for ages. What is the Wayland's accessibility issue? Accessibility is a desktop thing.
About Remote Support, what the X11's superior options are? Remmina and TeamViewer pretty much covered all my needs.
I must have missed something and willing to learn... Please enlighten me.

XLibre is still very much niche and the majority of distros do not have it in their official repos nor have plans to implement it.

At this time it is not on the roadmap or planned. Adding another core system where we would have to maintain both it and its dependencies against the current environment and packages would pull our resources from maintaining Solus as a whole.

I took time to educate myself on XLibre and not sure there is a good reason to bring something like that over. Seems like it would be something else that they team has to account for for every update, even if there was a community maintainer. I won't get into the "other stuff" around the project, but as Clintre said it looks like a niche project that has been outright rejected by many of the major distros. However at least there are options out there for those that are interested in it and that is not a bad thing.

X11 goes way back for every single person who chose Linux. I can see the sentiment and fear of changing and it's understandable. I used to have fear of the unknown, too.

Now that Wayland has been my DD I am not afraid at all. I miss Plank but other than that, I'm reasonably good.

Anyways personally I've moved forward to 10.10X and not looking backwards,, and backup distro is x11 Cinnamon.

See what year 2 brings for them.

We have 4 editions. Budgie, Gnome, Plasma and XFCE. Of those 4 the latest version of Budgie (Not in our repos yet) and Gnome do not support X11 at all and Plasma announced the end of X11 support in Plasma 6.8 from memory. This is not simply a case of X11 no longer being officially supported by these projects, it will not work at all, the legacy code is removed upstream reducing their maintenance burden.

So it was never going to happen, no one wants to support X11 and Wayland forever and distros are not an exception to this. Solus replaced MATE with XFCE after all https://getsol.us/2023/07/08/solus-4-4-released/

So I do not know why anyone thought X11Libre had any chance what so ever of widespread adoption let alone being supported by Solus specifically. If you want X11 long term Solus will not be for you nor will any of the major DEs that much should be clear.

There is nothing of value to be had keeping this thread open and having it necroed every X months to discuss points that are irrelevant to support realities, so I am locking.
