I have an old laptop I am modestly refurbishing...ordered cheap memory for it, and downloaded ultralight Alpine last night...now I am rethinking that. Thanks for your response. I am downloading Aeryn too.

brent They will be releasing a new ISO soon I believe. They've just finished rebuilding their infrastructure and all packages, and are getting ready to update the repository. They plan to issue an updated ISO.

GParted is included in the ISO. You will need to use that to partition your HD before installing. After that you can open the terminal and sudo lichen to start the installer.

brent, there was an install guide on the old SerpentOS forum, but access to that now seems to timeout, at least for me (https://forums.serpentos.com/d/80-how-to-install-serpentos). I remember that you had to pre-partition the disk before starting the installation. It recommended 3 partitions; 1 as EFI, 1 I can't recall, and the main partition formatted as XFS. I don't remember the recommended sizes either. Probably worth asking on the AerynOS support Matrix channel.

Tested a while back both Gnome and COSMIC versions (Alpha on Alpha is fun 😉 ). It was pretty stable. Obviously missing a lot of packages still and rough around the edges, but pretty stable. Well, the Gnome version was.

I did Distrowatch search for "Cosmic" and Aeryn wasn't there (nor anything I wanted to try except for Mandriva, but even Cosmic there is a community Spin) nor was it there at their website. It was a short-lived Alpha decision maybe?

brent You can choose cosmic during the install process. Gnome is recommended for a more cohesive experience.

EDIT: The last time I installed it you could choose COSMIC or GNOME.

brent They pulled the COSMIC version for now. Like I said, Alpha on Alpha was a bit much. I actually pinged them about it. You can still install during the install, but no dedicated ISO.

noted, thank you both. will see how this goes later. if their forum isn't up tonight for info I will just go Adelie or Alpine and save Aeryn for down the road or a dual boot.

@brent Aeryn forum is now on Github discussion, they decomissioned their Flarum forum. It is easier to manage it this way for them.

Question to anybody: can Gparted format something XFS? Maybe the install media does?

"Testing has shown that, due to how moss saves rollback states, xfs is by far the quickest filesystem in practice for AerynOS root partition usage.

We currently do not recommend either ext4 or f2fs root partitions, because testing has shown that they offer very poor performance on the first update (sudo moss sync -u) after a cold start of your computer compared to xfs."

It will be an adventure.

According to https://github.com/orgs/AerynOS/discussions/22#discussioncomment-12841719 step 5, it does.

I believe it uses systemd-boot too (if memory serves me correctly)
