Can't update Sublime Text through Software Center

Trying to do so throws an error about a missing directory:

And sure enough, the directory it is looking for is not present on my (relatively) freshly installed system.

What can I do about this?

As a side question: is it possible to update third party software using CLI?

You can run these commands in the terminal.
If you haven't done so already, run sudo eopkg install -c system.devel

That shouldn't be necessary. If it is (details please! ^^), then some dependency needs to be added to the Third Party Repository script for sublime-text.

It seems like there might be some GitHub rate limiting at play here. It also failed for me once, but worked the next time.

I mentioned system.devel because eopkg bi often relies on tools included in it. In many cases it's safer to install it upfront to avoid missing dependencies.

For this specific 3rd-party package, though, it might not be strictly necessary — it depends on what's already available in the system.

Either way, it's a common precaution. 😀

If you ever have any concrete examples please open an issue on the 3rd-party repository, or post about it in this forum. This should be fixed in the packaging scripts, not by the user having to install additional dependencies.

FWIW I tested all the Third Party Repo scripts in a fresh Solus XFCE VM and they all worked without a problem.

For the record, I had system.devel already installed on my machine, so the failure to update through Software Center was not caused by this.

So, as the original message and the accompanying screengrab suggest, looks like the mechanism in the SC makes certain assumptions about previous versions of Sublime Text being present on the system, while on a relatively fresh install they aren't, which leads effectively a crash. (Had to kill SC from CLI.)

I've had success downloading the package from git hub and then overwriting the files in the system install folders. But I haven't tried that in over a year. YMMV.

Staudey I tried with Sublime Text alone, in a fresh GNOME VM (same as my DE) and did not encounter the issue.

But my main installation is barely a month old and largely unaltered (apart from having had a bunch of software installed). The thing that changed for Sublime Text since I installed the system and when the error occurred was the release of a new ST version.

I don't know how the mechanism in Software Center works, but doesn't it pull and install the latest version? Because the initial installation was unproblematic for me as well. It's the subsequent attempt at updating that went south and as far as I understand your test did not account for that circumstance.

Yes, I wasn't testing for your issue, but the supposed system.devel requirement. Regardless, updating and installing is (almost) the exact same when it comes to Third Party apps as there is no upgrade mechanism for them. It's the just the label of the button that changes if the package is already installed. As I said in my first message, it was probably a GitHub rate limiting issue, caching issue or something similar. I guess this could be detected with proper error handling for the mechanism, but the Third Party repository (and Software Center itself) is on its way out anyway, so I don't think anyone would invest the effort.
