NAS Drives

I came by a WD nas few years back it was defective cpu so I trashed it and kept
the 4 WD red drives.
Long story short I am sure it prob something I did but copied alot stuff to one and then somehow trashed the
file system beyond repair so I got the files recovered and erased it and partition it again.
Hdsentinal and spinrite (After 30 hours of testing 6TB) say its in perfect health.

Using Non NAS drives in a NAS is a bad Idea but using them in a Desktop for a Storage drive
I can see no Problem even tho they have special firmware.

The Issue on the net seems to be the TLER setting but been my experience if a sector goes bad it goes bad
so what if it times out.
Once these are full they will be backups.

Guess wondered if anybody has used WD red or Nas drives in regular PCS.

I use a Seagate IronWolf 8TB NAS drive in my PC.

For NAS drives the difference is general build quality, MTBF stats, warranty. They are built to be ran 24/7. Handle vibrations caused by multi drive systems better etc.

In case of Seagate they don't use SMR in their NAS / Enterprise drives which is a good thing.

You will have no issues using it in a regular system.

They should run well. I actually have an older NAS that has been running those 24/7 since 2019 and still going. The system is just for backing up data from my new NAS, but I will use it until it dies.

Original-Syn Wellllllllllllllll this is why I do what I do on things.
When I posted last night spinrite was still checking at 93% done when I woke this morning
everything was RED..lol and stopped at 94% saying dont use disk so I ran another prog
checking and had bad sectors slow sectors you name it.
The more I messed with worse it got so that answers that it was nothing I did in the first place
which makes me feel better.

Got so much data going have buy a new disk so can transfer from other reds so I can test them.
Oh well thats how the ball bounces.

(Note🙂 You gotta test stuff to know if its good or bad.

Axios Bummer, you just never know with older drives. I am actually afraid to power off my NAS at this point. But as mentioned, it is just used as a backup at this point.
