Solus Updates for Week 19, 2025

The HPLIP update breaks my fix (https://bugs.launchpad.net/hplip/+bug/2087709) for the D1560 printer I use wrt Cleaning Heads and Alignment. I have updated the bug with a new fix which means it again works after a reboot. The file has moved to /usr/share/hplip/prnt/ldl.py and can be edited as per the fix given above in the link.

Otherwise a smooth update with minimal download on Plasma VM and bare metal Intel i5.

I am not sure what a patch is I just edit the ldl.py file manually to achieve the fix. Just googled linux patch files. I am not sure this can be applied as it is a python file and the problem is the file sends the incorrect string to the printer and needs to be in binary.

Many thanks I had no clue. I see HPLIP has another update so this patch maybe needed when v3.25.2 comes along.

3.25.2 has other issues we are attempting to resolve.

3.24.4 currently has 27 patches on Solus and there are probably other issues no one knows about like the issue we just addressed.

Suffice to say hplip is not well maintained the python3 patch is from 2016 and is still required. The patches will keep being applied when new versions are released unless we have reason to believe they are no longer required.

Bugs encountered in Solus Gnome:

Bug 1: This update has made the new papirus icons in the gnome control area (top right) shrink. I use fractional scaling at 150% on a 1920x1080 laptop but when changing to 100% scaling (without rebooting) the problem persisted- they were still smaller than before. (See image taken at 150% scaling. All icons highlighted in yellow are smaller, and maybe even the speaker icon too)

Bug 2: Another bug from last week or maybe the week before- when downloading images or videos from firefox, the "where do you want to download this to?" window that appears will crash and close if any folder other than the folder that it originally offers is selected. I.e: if I want to right click > "save target as" a .webm file and download it straight into my /Videos folder I cannot do this. Instead I must first download to /Downloads and then open the file manager and move it there.

(Eg: To upload the image to this post I had to move the image from /Pictures/Screenshots into my /Desktop folder first, because browsing to the desired folder in the upload window crashes when I select the /Screenshots subfolder.)

Bug 3: On a fresh reboot I cannot control my laptop screen's brightness from the gnome control area (top right). The slider does not appear (See same image). Instead I must change brightness with the hardware keys on my keyboard and only then does it appear. This also appeared a week or two ago.

I would have submitted bugs 2 and 3 earlier but I was moving house so had other things on my plate.

alfisya Thanks for checking. It works on my other machine, but on this fresh laptop install it crashes. Installed Caja as a temporary workaround -- it works.

First of all, the Solus update notification in Discover now appears.
However, it will only appear once, whereas in Solus Software, the notification will appear every time you log in, until you process it.
This means you'll have to click the notification as soon as it appears in Discover to process the update of packages and thus, avoid forgetting it (or make a note of it to process it later).
But it's still a real plus.

13 Solus updates to process in Discover this week, and only the "Inspector" package was processed.
Discover refused to process the other system update packages, requesting to do it again later (unfortunately, I didn't note the technical details of this anomaly).

I tried to process these system updates in Solus Software, and everything went well.

I had to rollback to the previous week because something kept causing Budgie to crash despite the apps themselves seeming to work just fine.

Any idea what package from this week interacts with Budgie?

I'm attempting to redo the update, the download is taking longer this time so maybe my session got mangled somehow.

It continues to fail shortly after starting. Rolling it back helped, but then I upgraded again and it failed and now rolling back isn't helping either.

If that doesn't work, you can try to reinstall the budgie-desktop
