Solus Updates for Week 19, 2025

Heya folks! It's sync day, and that means it's time for the weekly Solus roundup!

This week, eopkg.bin was updated to version 4.2.0. This release adds a few exciting features and fixes, including the ability to reorder repositories, and a fix for some very slow package updates. We've also removed some dead weight in the form of HTTP Basic-Auth support for repositories, which we couldn't think of a good use for. Read the full changelog if you're interested, and make sure to check out the eopkg.bin command if you do package management from the command line. This compiled Python 3 eopkg will replace the old Python 2 version as default on all Solus systems Soon™️ (no ETAs!).

We have a new package hitting the repository this week. OpenROAD is a completely open-source VLSI design tool that provides a full logic-to-physical-design flow. This is a great tool for anyone working on digital hardware design.

Security updates

vivaldi-stable was updated to 7.3.3635.12-293 (@HarveyDevel). Includes security fixes for CVE-2025-4096.

I knew work was being done to create a Python3 version of eopkg that was compiled with Nuitka, but I didn't realize that this newer/alternate version of eopkg had already been released, even if it isn't the default version. As someone who does most of my package management from the command line, is eopkg.bin what I should be using instead of the older Python2 based version?

So far, so good on my Budgie VM and Plasma laptop. Not seeing anything in the logs that stands out.

Just wanted to highlight the very slow updates fix only in eopkg.bin (python3 version of eopkg) a bit more.

It resolves an issue long time users will have encountered when files move between packages. This was probably most noticeable with some nodejs changes awhile back and more recently with linux-firmware being split into several sub packages.

If I am remembering correctly the linux-firmware split took me 8 minutes to install. I am so happy this is fixed.

small for me, a dozen. almost all theming. I love the updated packages list, @EbonJaeger . I just discovered paper which is really nice. I have already dumped evince for pdfs....kind of...
--I forgot Budgie does not have a 'set default app' for pdfs in the 'set default app' portion of settings. But I am good right-clicking.

Okular is my go-to PDF app, always has been and always will be.

flanier You can use it as daily driver (I do) but we will still implore people to use the default python2 version. There are a few blockers that makes eopkg.bin not yet the default, but so far it is very promising.

Also as a side note, if you are using Gnome Software or KDE Discover, it is using eopkg.bin on the backend. While solus-sc still uses the python2 version.

The HPLIP update breaks my fix (https://bugs.launchpad.net/hplip/+bug/2087709) for the D1560 printer I use wrt Cleaning Heads and Alignment. I have updated the bug with a new fix which means it again works after a reboot. The file has moved to /usr/share/hplip/prnt/ldl.py and can be edited as per the fix given above in the link.

Otherwise a smooth update with minimal download on Plasma VM and bare metal Intel i5.

I am not sure what a patch is I just edit the ldl.py file manually to achieve the fix. Just googled linux patch files. I am not sure this can be applied as it is a python file and the problem is the file sends the incorrect string to the printer and needs to be in binary.

3.25.2 has other issues we are attempting to resolve.

3.24.4 currently has 27 patches on Solus and there are probably other issues no one knows about like the issue we just addressed.

Suffice to say hplip is not well maintained the python3 patch is from 2016 and is still required. The patches will keep being applied when new versions are released unless we have reason to believe they are no longer required.

Bugs encountered in Solus Gnome:

Bug 1: This update has made the new papirus icons in the gnome control area (top right) shrink. I use fractional scaling at 150% on a 1920x1080 laptop but when changing to 100% scaling (without rebooting) the problem persisted- they were still smaller than before. (See image taken at 150% scaling. All icons highlighted in yellow are smaller, and maybe even the speaker icon too)

Bug 2: Another bug from last week or maybe the week before- when downloading images or videos from firefox, the "where do you want to download this to?" window that appears will crash and close if any folder other than the folder that it originally offers is selected. I.e: if I want to right click > "save target as" a .webm file and download it straight into my /Videos folder I cannot do this. Instead I must first download to /Downloads and then open the file manager and move it there.

(Eg: To upload the image to this post I had to move the image from /Pictures/Screenshots into my /Desktop folder first, because browsing to the desired folder in the upload window crashes when I select the /Screenshots subfolder.)

Bug 3: On a fresh reboot I cannot control my laptop screen's brightness from the gnome control area (top right). The slider does not appear (See same image). Instead I must change brightness with the hardware keys on my keyboard and only then does it appear. This also appeared a week or two ago.

I would have submitted bugs 2 and 3 earlier but I was moving house so had other things on my plate.

All's well in GNOME for me. No issues.

alfisya Thanks for checking. It works on my other machine, but on this fresh laptop install it crashes. Installed Caja as a temporary workaround -- it works.
