Redshift not working In KDE Plasma

Axios Hmm. I did click the save button but did not see a popup. Also could not find a command for the konsole that worked. Kept getting command not found. Edit: sorry been up to long I guess. I DID get the popup and did click OK but nothing changed.

it should adjust screen when you move slider.
But I never tried it with wayland.

My eyes do that crap to so I have to adjust gamma now and then monitors not bad laptops
suck for me.

Yes, you're right. Thanks for filing the issue (here's a link to it. Based on the output in the bug report, this may not be a packaging issue after all. I thought this might be a problem with Geoclue but I see it's getting your location (you did say that). It gets mine as well. We'll diagnose the problem more in the bug report (I asked for some information there).

Note that redshift hasn't seen a release since 2018. If the problem is because things have changed in Wayland, and redshift needs to change, that probably isn't going to happen. In case we aren't able to resolve this, you might look into alternatives.

Since it appears Redshift does not work on Wayland I have been looking for an alternative. Most of them only adjust the color or britghtness and not the gamma. I have found a couple that are for Wayland and do adjust the gamma but they say they are for Wayland compositors supporting wlr-gamma-control. I don't know what that means. Do all Wayland compositors support wlr-gamma-control? Or does anyone know if Wayland on Solus has that?

I really appreciate all the help and suggestions I have gotten in this thread. Thanks to all.

As @EbonJaeger mentioned in your issue, check out gammastep. It looks like a drop-in replacement of redshift for wayland.

Just for info, Plasma has a built in Night Light feature that more or less replicates the functionality of redshift.

CorvusRuber I have been using Night Light as I mentioned in my first post. Night Light does not give you any adjustment for gamma.

I just wanna say when I first posted didnt realize this type of program would not carry over to wayland
but it dawned on me shortly afterwards.

me either. I don't automatically assume wayland is as restrictive as it is but I'll have to change my thinking.

I have tried to install Gammastep using this command that is supposed to be for Solus:
＄ sudo eopkg install gammastep
This came back with a few lines that each said success. Did not show any problems.

When I searched the menu I found "Run Gammastep". When I ckicked on that I got the same results as with Redshift. Mouse curser changes to icon and icon shows up on the task bar. Then both disappear after a few seconds and normal mouse curser comes back.

Trying again in Konsole I got this:
carrollb@carroll-solus ~ $ gammastep
Error: Could not control gamma, exiting.
Error: Failed to start adjustment method: wayland

So it looks like Gammastep also doesn't like Wayland or vice versa.

I've been learning a lot today too about it since you mentioned it this morning. Supposedly XWayland in an X11 environment can bridge the gap but not for every app.

I see a list of many apps that can't run in Wayland without modification/tweaking including many flatpaks (which is a mesa in freedesktop issue).

While I personally have no problem making do with another app if it has to be that way, many do not roll like this.
At the end of the day, the Gammastep people offer a common blurb I've seen with other disclaimers: mutter-based stuff is a challenge. And the wayland compositor continues to evolve. When that is dialed in, look out.

As you both have said I also am learning a lot. But so far none of it has been helpful except now I know several ways that don't work to get gamma control. Just like Night Light there are several other apps that let you control the color temperature. And that does help to reduce eye strain. And if you are using a desktop PC then most likely your monitor has a contrast control like the older TVs used to have. But as far as I know there aren't any contrast controls on laptops, only brightness. Redshift that worked well in the past did have a gamma ccontrol which appeared to work the same as a contrast control on a monitor or TV.

I appreciate all the help and I will keep digging too to see if I can find a gamma control that will work with Wayland.

A quick question. Is it possible to switch to xorg and still keep plasma? I do really like Plasma but was okay in the past with other DEs.

Citfta as someone who is looking at cataract surgery in one eye maybe end of year...is it possible the needs of your eyes may change as they heal? i.e. less emphasis on gamma and more on overall program dimness and warm tones?

This is the easiest workaround for now.

Thinking about this more, the KDE folks are interested in making Plasma more accessible. I went looking on the bug tracker and found this feature request. I've added a not about your use case. Feel free to cc yourself on the feature request if you want updates.
