Redshift not working In KDE Plasma

Since having cataract surgery a few years ago my eyes are more sensitive to screen brightness. When I was using MXLinux I discovered Redshift. One of the settings in Redshift allowed me to change the Gamma setting. Using that gave me much better contrast making it easier to read text that was clsoe to the background color. Like gray on black.

A couple of months ago I installed Redshift on my Solus laptop. When I click on the icon in the menu my curser changes to the Redshift icon and the Redshift icon shows up on my taskbar. Then they both disappear and my mouse curser goes back to normal. I thought I would try it in the terminal with the command redshift. When I did that it came back with looking for location using Geoclue. It then gave me my location and then just stopped. Nothing happens after that.

I thought maybe Night Light was causing a problem so I turned it off in settings but still no go with Redshift. I installed the addon of Redshift for Plaama 6 but that didn't change anything either. Does anyone else use Redshift with KDE? My system has the lastes updates from this past week.

this is a known bug but I have a work around I like:
redshift -O 3500
this will dim you right away, if you like 3500 that is.
that's the good news.

the bad news about this workaround is I haven't been able to successfully run any commands after that. It does not like you trying redshift -O 2000, deciding you hate it, and going back to redshift -O 3000. You have to know what you want and you can over-ride the geoclue thang. Works for me.

Citfta I Use this just extract it and run the xgamma gui it makes an auto start
file after you adjust gamma.
You can delete the auto start if it doesnt work out.

This is a packaging issue with Redshift. Our package isn't providing a working Geoclue provider (for location).

Please open a bug (if there isn't one already) on our bug tracker. In it, please post the text of the terminal command you ran and the output. By opening an issue, it will allow our package maintainers to look into it and keep track of progress. Thanks.

Thanks for the suggestion Axios but something isn't working. When I click on the Gui for xgamma the gui opens and I can make adjustments to the settings but nothing changes on the screen. So I thought maybe I need to restart since it makes a startup file. After restarting and seeing no change to the screen I went to the autostart menu and it shows that xgamma failed to start. Not sure why that happened.

I did file a bug report about Reshift on github.

I'll try xgamma in the Konsole and see what that shows.

Axios Hmm. I did click the save button but did not see a popup. Also could not find a command for the konsole that worked. Kept getting command not found. Edit: sorry been up to long I guess. I DID get the popup and did click OK but nothing changed.

it should adjust screen when you move slider.
But I never tried it with wayland.

Yes, you're right. Thanks for filing the issue (here's a link to it. Based on the output in the bug report, this may not be a packaging issue after all. I thought this might be a problem with Geoclue but I see it's getting your location (you did say that). It gets mine as well. We'll diagnose the problem more in the bug report (I asked for some information there).

Note that redshift hasn't seen a release since 2018. If the problem is because things have changed in Wayland, and redshift needs to change, that probably isn't going to happen. In case we aren't able to resolve this, you might look into alternatives.

Since it appears Redshift does not work on Wayland I have been looking for an alternative. Most of them only adjust the color or britghtness and not the gamma. I have found a couple that are for Wayland and do adjust the gamma but they say they are for Wayland compositors supporting wlr-gamma-control. I don't know what that means. Do all Wayland compositors support wlr-gamma-control? Or does anyone know if Wayland on Solus has that?

As @EbonJaeger mentioned in your issue, check out gammastep. It looks like a drop-in replacement of redshift for wayland.

Just for info, Plasma has a built in Night Light feature that more or less replicates the functionality of redshift.

CorvusRuber I have been using Night Light as I mentioned in my first post. Night Light does not give you any adjustment for gamma.

but it dawned on me shortly afterwards.

me either. I don't automatically assume wayland is as restrictive as it is but I'll have to change my thinking.
