All you need to do is install plymouth. But if you boot quickly, the animation just flashes.

I think I'm actually requesting the wrong thing. I want to use one of the selectable splash screens in the KDE settings, not the ones available through Plymouth. I think this should be shown either immediately before the login screen or after logging in before the desktop appears.

I'm now on Gnome so this is from memory; In settings go where you change icons, theme etc. three's should be something called splash. But I read that the settings app got a makeover, so it might have changed.

On my version it's Colors & Themes/Splash Screen. I selected the one I want and clicked apply but it looks like further tweaking is needed because it never appears.

Are you trying the default splash screen? If so, you could try a custom one and see if it works.

SethStorm666 Yes, maybe with Plymouth. I was just hoping there was an easy way to do this with KDE since the option comes baked into the settings.

After switching my desktop session from X11 to Wayland, it works! It appears only Wayland supports the splash screen feature.
