Black screenwith cursor after update (Plasma, 4.5 Resilience Kernel 5.13.1-187)

I just updated my laptop running Solus Plasma 4.5 Resilience and Kernel 5.13.1-187 (thats the only kernel i have installed) After logging in on the normal UI, the plasma logo and wheel spin are centered, with "Plasma made by KDE in the bottom right corner as normal. Then it logs into to the lovely and very much not annoying blank screen on login with cursor.

ctrl+alt+F2 is a "faded" login screen with password box filled in but not able to be interacted with, and i can get into a TTY command line fine on ctrl+alt+F3

Oddly, on TTY1, (where the normal login happens) I can get the hot corner to activate for workspaces, however theyre all blank. I could get the menu to pop up for multiple screens as well ( i dont remember the key combo for that) Additionally, after some time it goes to the lock screen, with the time and date, and I can get the login screen again like normal. Logging in has the same original effect. So i try some things in the TTY to no avail, but I need to update eopkg to do more, and i get 5 "failed to fetch file" and Hit max retry count when downloading: "https://cdn.getsol.us/repo/shannon/eopkg-index.xml.xz.sha1sum" This is the output of sudo eopkg ur and sudo eopkg up

I saw online that this may be a time and date issue, so i tried systemsettings and get
qt.qpa.xcb: could not connect to display qt.qpa.plugin: From 6.5.0, xcb-cursor0 or libxcb-cursor0 is needed to load the Qt xcb platform plugin. qt.qpa.plugin: Could not load the Qt platform plugin "xcb" in " " even though it was found. This application failed to start because no Qt platform plugin could be initialized. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem. But the login date and time are correct to the day hour and minute, so i dont think its that.

If anyone can tell me how to scroll up and down in the outputs on TTY, that would be great. especially when things like eopkg -h output more than can be displayed at once on the screen.

As suggested here by pomon, the outputs of ping google.com -s1000 -c5 is ping: google.com: Temporary failure in name resolution.

Just for fun i tried again to install the nvidia-glx-driver- current, common, and 32bit. Fails to fetch and git max retry for "https://cdn.getsol.us/repo/shannon/e/egl-wayland/egl-wayland-1.1.17-27.1.x86_64.eopkg" To be fair i'm not sure if my Toshiba laptop even has nvidia drivers. So as suggested, here's the output of inxi -G:

When i tried inxi -G --display it is identical except the end Message: No advanced graphics data found on this system

sudo eopkg rdb rebuilds the eopkg databases without issue. 1154 packages added in total. Done rebuilding FilesDB (version: 3)

So to reiterate, black screen on login, cursor only. I have read through the other posts on this, but nothing seems to be relevant or helpful that I've tried.

Pagers like less are useful to be able to scroll through long output from a terminal command. Pipe the command through less like this (using eopkg history as an example):

eopkg hs | less

Note that eopkg -h isn't a valid command, you must have typed in something else if you didn't just get the help output.

For the overall issue, your system has to be customized to hold packages back if you truly have run updates.

Solus is now on 4.7 Endurance. Can you verify those values are present in /etc/os-release?
Your kernel is quiet old. It should be either 6.12.12 for the current kernel or 6.6.75 for the lts kernel.

The first thing to do is to make sure your kernel and packages are actually up to date. An up to date kernel may fix your issue. Try running this to get the kernel up to date:

sudo eopkg it --reinstall linux-current

Then see if your kernel is up to date.

as far as updating the kernel, it didnt work.(yes, i do have internet on)

Troubleshooting the wifi. I have a feeling its not connected.

nmcli dev status outputs

wlp2s0 wifi disconnected
p2p-dev-wlp2s0-p2p disconnected

I need to know how i can force the wifi to connect. I looked here and also here

but i cant find or access any file that has the wifi ssid and psk. I'm not sure what to do here. Maybe i can boot up a live version and mount the hard drive to update it that way? What is the best thing to start with?

update: I booted into a live version of solus and was unable to mount the drive. wifi works fine on the live version. If i can mount the hard drive and update it through the terminal on a live version i think that will solve this issue.

Mick In Solus Live, issue the command inxi -i and see what driver the WiFi card supports. Then issue this command on the installed system. We will know something more.

And if you already want to do something with Solus Live then you should use chroot

not sure why i cant upgrade or update even thought im connected to wifi on the live system right now.

pomon i fixed it,

I took a break, went into it with a fresh mind and also through live linux mint instead of live Solus. I thought i'd try a different distro for giggles, well i didn't have the issue with the mount -make-rslave /target/sys, and i successfully followed the guide that you sent about Boot Rescue and updated/installed the latest kernel, and everything else too.

It did boot into a black screen again, however, in TTY, i switched it to the newest using sudo clr-boot-manager update (it wasnt available as a choice on the reboot after the chroot kernel update, it only showed the outdated 5.13 kernel in Grub) and restarted. Now I am typing to you in my fixed install! Thanks for the help.

To recap, Follow the Boot rescue guide, restarted, manually switched to the new kernel in TTY, restarted again, and now I'm done. Time for a celebratory beverage.

I've been trying to work this problem for a few hours. Following the chroot guide I am trying to do sudo mount --make-rslave /target/sys however it says mount: target/sys: not mount point or bad option. but thats the only one not working in that list. So as a result, i cant copy and paste the resolv.conf into the solus drive. Nano wont let me modify the file, even in root/sudo.

pinging 8.8.8.8 works in the live instance and the chroot. however, ping google.com only works in the live instance.
