Is there plans to add those kind of things in the new software center? To be clear, I'm not requesting it. Just asking if there are plans to do it.

Well such a feature would require tracking and Solus doesn't track so my guess would be, no.

I guess they could have a "Featured" section but... Why?

Harvey For the top-of-the-line or established open-source software. Kinda like a homepage. It's their repository on their server, can't they track how many times a certain software is downloaded from the server side instead of the user side?

Seems pointless to me, the sort of content for sites like buzzfeed / youtube top 10 lists.

When you use mirrors / CDN, no its not all yours and even if it was, would still require work to create a system to track it.

Tracking is easy but isn't done, a featured page, on the other hand, would be much simpler and not require tracking user activity.

The current Solus software center doesn't have a home page. IMHO, there needs to be some sort of home page where some of the (presumably) most downloaded apps like GIMP, Krita, or Kdenlive are featured. Whether the solus dev team wanted to implement tracking or not is up to them, but IMHO a better home page that features actual apps instead of just category is needed.

I don't really understand what benefit it would bring to the OS though? Anyone needing those sorts of Apps either already know about them or will find out about them within thirty seconds of searching online. The ability to set personalised "favorites" might be beneficial, maybe, but an over arching "most popular"... nah. I ditched windows to escape that sort of thing.

Software discoverability will certainly be improved with the Software Center rewrite and for sure it won't involve telemetry. @JoshStrobl will certainly talk about this in a blog post when work on the new Software Center will be on-going (or when it will be released).

kyrios Yeah, because the current software center is in my humble opinion too "utilitarian" I would say. What if someone just wanted to browse for good apps? Like browsing Youtube or Netflix for good stuff to watch. I think the new software center need a little bit of that.

I find it of value to know what others have found interesting/useful. Though maybe that can be accomodated by the forums. I've certainly learned about new software that I wasn't aware in the last few months. Just because you might find it by a search isn't really the same...because I don't know that I might be interested in it, so I'm not searching for it. But when someone brags about it, I think..hey yeah, that's neat, etc.
This is just a wild suggestion, but maybe someone that wants to contribute but doesn't have many technical skills, would be interested in doing a monthly (or weekly? or occasional?) column on new or interesting software that others might not be aware of. It wouldn't even necessarily have to be Solus specific, it would be of interest to the greater community.

dbarron And then feature it right in the software center! Yeah, that would be cool. I can already think of the mock-up. It would be interesting if there's a GIMP in the front column and then a link to news article about it (probably by itsfoss.com). Or maybe someone just wanted to convince others that Dolphin is better than Nautilus. Or maybe a new apps never seen before just hit the repo and someone wanted to make a compelling argument about why you should try it out. Hell yeah, I would contribute to that!

That might be a great approach Faith, to pool a series of articles written by various folks. Hey Josh/Drake/Justin/(and yes everyone else)...thoughts ? I'm not sure if you would want to build into the tool itself, but maybe a website feature? (you could build it into tool if you wanted of course).

dbarron Software continuously get updated so personally I don't think integrating reviews into the SC would be a good idea as they would become outdated. Also people may have very different tastes and opinions or needs.
But on the other hand, having a thread on the forums in which people present the software they like/use/discovered would be great, community forums are there to share and exchange and it's a living place and there is an Off-Topic tag for this. You could try to post to present a soft you like and ask other people to do so. 😀

If we want to take this off-topic, and since dbarron and fatih asked....I find no value in telemetry of any kind, I do not value via a star system what anyone thinks. One man's "great app," as Fatih says, is another person's turd. The only opinion I have to satisfy is my own. I can research all else myself---I won't take anyone's word for it. I will greatly value your opinion here, spoke from your mouth. But a star rating on a piece of software I will pay no attention to. Fakery is half of telemetry anyway. Get off my lawn.

This "to pool a series of articles written by various folks" re: software might be better. A private pro-con library about 3 tabs removed from the forum, for critical reading---if they can afford the storage--makes more sense.
2 cents cause you asked. Good to have this in open air.

kyrios I would appreciate if such a thread could be integrated to the software center itself. It might also bring new user to the forum and increase the active userbase. I agree with brent I agree that my opinion is my own and that stars are useless, but if I just want to look for a new apps I never heard about, I gotta start somewhere.

Fatih19 I laugh when I re-read myself without enough coffee! Not in the mood for shiny things maybe! BUT....I completely agree that IF the core team's goal (a goal) is to grow the amount of solus users then some bells and whistles may be necessary. They would have to re-invent the wheel as far as shiny and dignity, but if anyone could do it...

brent They would need to intefrate it so that it feels seamless. No other distros as far as I know offers what we've been discussing here, so hey. Maybe Solus can fill that gap.

New/Updated/Featured applications I think would be nice, and rotate it each week when the sync goes in. Wouldn't take too much time to write up a quick small bit on each application, maybe 3, new, updated and featured to display on the homepage.
