Keeping up with the latest Solus announcements

In a effort to stay updated on the latest announcements i have added Solus Mastodon in my RSS reader since as far as i can tell and based on previous discussion this forum does not support rss/atom.

For example on Friday it was posted on Mastodon (in addition to the forums) that there won't be a sync this week

For convinience simply copy this link and add it to your rss reader and future postings will show up in your reader.

Though to be on the safe side i check the latest announcements here too at least weekly/bi-weekly since i figure the forum will always have priority.

Just wanted to share this since it's something i found useful and figured someone else out there might too.

Edit: Only thing my post attempts to convey is that if you use a RSS reader you can get all the official (since it is managed by Solus Staff) Mastodon posts in your reader of choice. If you don´t use an RSS nor plan to or have no interest in this then simply disregard this post

Thanks for doing this. I'm sure there are some who spend much of their time with Mastodon who will find an RSS feed very helpful. However, I might point out that on Friday it was also posted here in the Solus forum, in two different threads, that there won't be a sync this week, and why.

It would be interesting to discover whether there's anything useful on Mastodon that isn't also available to ordinary forum users, but the example you provided doesn't make me want to create a new feed account, and regularly check for new content on yet another application. Is there more?

To be clear no one needs to spend any time on Mastodon nor create a account for this since this is a public feed and just a way to get Solus communications into a rss reader.

And for those Solus forum users who don't use an RSS reader for anything else? Some of them probably don't even know what RSS stands for. Personally, I use it one time to check on my favorite web comics on most mornings, otherwise I ignore it until the next day, but I check for new posts on the Solus forum many times a day.

As I tried to say, I don't see Mastadon replacing the forum, especially for forum regulars, but for those already using Mastodon, I'm pretty sure your efforts will be very much appreciated. I wish you well with it.

Yes, I am one of those Solus users who only have access (by choice) to this forum.

In my opinion, rather than bury announcements or mentions in a channel (or two), a separate and dedicated for that purpose channel should be created by the team, where announcements re update cancellations would be placed. In the past, it was done that way, but lately I could not find them unless I browsed other forum channels.

An oversight perhaps?

elfprince I had kind of the same idea. An "official announcement" thread in the forum that is pinned to the top where only team members can post to inform userbase for things like deferred syncs etc so that nobody has read all the threads for such an info.

that's a possibility at least it could be centralized here. but I've put myself in the habit of scanning threads because if some news makes an appearance at mastadon someone always brings it here immediately. is breaking news worthy of a pinned thread? probably. I don't know what an alternative could be at the moment.

EDIT: I would know nothing about the latest Budgie moves if @Lucien_Lachance didn't regularly update this forum.
maybe a Tab with only solus mastodon chatter, solus in the wild new news, solus blog news, latest everything in Solus' orbit new (kde, budgie, xfce, and gnome updates). anyone could just post links to the solus relevant stuff with no comment? the only danger is lunkheads like me who might pass on mozilla news and it might get outside the target...spitballing only...

There already is a specific tag for sync announcements (and deferrals) called "Announcements"

Is that what you meant when you said you wanted a specific "channel" in the forum for these?

In fact, the current top most post on the main forum page, and the Announcements tag, is the pinned post about sync being deferred for Week 44 (01-Nov). There's a small screenshot brent provided, here are a couple more.

I don't know how we could make this clearer, honestly.

It seems the confusion stems from the fact that no announcements were posted for Week 43 or 41. We can make sure to be better about providing sync news more regularly.

At this point, I don't want the usefulness of the original post to be drowned out by tangents, so I'm locking the thread. If you want to discuss the pros and cons of RSS vs Mastodon vs the forums, or other topics, feel free to start a new topic.

I am not going harp on because sometimes I am guilty of it to.
(But reading the forum is to ones benefit!)
I think usually that is posted in weekly updates so I c no reason to change if one cant at least read
not sure why they are even on the forum stuff isnt going jump out at you.

You may have time and interest to do that, and you are welcome to it. Perhaps others do not.

The forum
The matrix
The mastodon
As long as the team members find their time to feed them, all informations are spreaded widely enough and everything is good as it is.
And everybody can handle it like he wants.
Nothing got lost in the past I think, everybody was informed well, if he wanted.

AlphaElwedritsch Looks nice on paper. Your statements totally overlook and ignore users who do not have or want to use other social media, except for the forum.

It was a very simple idea to stick on top of a dedicated and appropriately named thread an announcement about no sync taking place. Just like they stick the announcement about the update details. In my opinion, the team just forgot or considered it not important.

I do not wish to belabor this topic (a small issue) , enough has been said on both sides. So, can somebody please LOCK THIS thread? Thank you.

Totally agree.

It is worth remembering the remarkable information work that @EbonJaeger does each week during the weekly Solus updates.
And @Harvey reported on the Solus updates post for week 42 that there would be no updates planned for week 43:

Which makes me say that the Solus forum seems sufficient to inform its users.

Even if I enjoyed reading Reddit during the major incident on a server that seriously affected Solus during the first quarter of 2023.
Today, we are no longer there.
Solus has been thoroughly restructured since then to allow it to consider the future in a sustainable way.

So, too many sources of information risks creating some confusion.
But I have no doubt that @Pjol 's approach was based on good intentions, thanks.

That is the source of the issue. The notice was not placed in its own separate thread and stickied on top. It was mentioned in another post.

All I wanted to say is it would have been nice to give the cancellation its own thread that it deserved. Like I said earlier, not all threads are read by users.

There is no issue in my opinion.
What is so hard or bad when we have no sync for a week ?
I`m totally sure if there is something we need it will be cherry picked.
And if someone really would miss a sync he will try to figure out why.
So he/she will read some threads or even ask.

No big deal to me.

MikeK61 Of course no issue. This is not a problem for me at all. I am not one sitting and waiting for an update every Friday. 😆
But, if you care to recall, there were several instances in the near past when a few users were surprised and confused about no updates on those particular weekends.
So, I simply stated that a special post policy on a standing basis in that regard would allay any confusions.
