Heya folks! It's Friday, and that means it's time for the weekly Solus roundup! Today is the first sync since we released the Solus 4.6 Convergence ISOs. If you haven't yet, definitely check out our blog post about it!

Updating from 4.5 to 4.6

As a reminder, you do not have to reinstall to get 4.6. All you have to do is install the weekly updates as normal.

Note that, after you update your existing install, it will still show 4.5 Resilience. This is a purely cosmetic issue.

We are working on a fix for existing installs not showing 4.6 Convergence, despite being fully up-to-date.

Changes this week

There aren't a lot of changes this week, since we wanted to still keep things as stable as possible in case we had to do emergency syncs or cherry-picks following the release of Solus 4.6. After this sync, though, the floodgates will be opening! We have accumulated a sizable backlog of package updates waiting to be landed, including some much-anticipated desktop updates. πŸ‘€

Bug fixes

The issue where accountsservice was not installed on new Plasma systems has been fixed by making it a dependency of plasma-workspace, which provides the Users settings module.

New packages

We have some new packages this week. First, we have ibus-bamboo, a module for IBus that enables users to input Vietnamese characters on Linux.

Next is xarchiver, a desktop-independent archiver front-end.

Lastly, we now have ponysay. It is a rewrite of cowsay, but with ponies. Need I say more?

Solus Cleanup Crew status

Our Solus Cleanup Crewℒ️ has been hard at work this week bringing the repository up to current standards:

Most of these tasks are beginner-friendly, and can be a great way to learn Solus packaging. We invite anyone that has the time and inclination to join us!

How you can help

If you would like to join:

  1. Join the Solus Packaging Room on Matrix
  2. Read and practice our packaging documentation
  3. Submit your first Pull Request. We recommend doing the homepage task
  4. Follow along the review process until your PR gets merged
  5. Continue on contributing!

Security updates

This week brings security updates. As always, install all available updates to have the latest vulnerability protections.

General updates

The full list of updated packages can be found here.

That’s all for this week, folks! We'll be here same time, same place next week for another roundup of the news!

anything else would have surprised me too πŸ˜‰

      Install once, update forever

AlphaElwedritsch t's a new package in repo, but you must install it first to use it

No thanks! I will wait for the OrangutanSays app.

where does fastfetch get its information from?
      Probably not from lsb-release?
It's stupid that 4.5 still says "Solus resilience". Where does fastfetch get the name from?

/etc/os-release the file belonging to the baselayout package that we can not update until the epoch repo is in place. Work is underway to allow us to update this information without updating the baselayout package.

'Users with the proprietary NVIDIA drivers and the 6.10 kernel may experience a black screen or errors on a black screen after waking the system from sleep' <- Seems that I am in this situation. Is there an issue somewhere that I could follow to get information on this?

          cherry-picked discord 0.0.72

          Cherry-picked networkmanager-libreswan for CVE-2024-9050

Staudey at this point I'm not investing too much time into Plasma 6.1 debugging since Plasma 6.2 is almost upon us (I actually don't have a plasma 6.1 system to test with anymore). It's likely that some issues of that nature might be resolved by the upcoming version, if not we can look further at that point.

I mentioned this yesterday in another thread but posting it here for more visibility.

Sync has been deferred to give additional time for testing of Gnome 47.1, Kernel 6.11.5, nvidia driver improvements etc.
