Solus 4.6 Convergence Released

Heya, folks! Today is release day! We are excited to announce the availability of Solus 4.6 Convergence. Check out our blog post for all the details!

Solus is a rolling-release distribution, so you do not need to reinstall to get 4.6 on your system. As long as you are fully up-to-date, your install will be no different from a fresh installation.

EbonJaeger So I have Solus 4.5 xfce beta. I did some few updates just now. Can i assume i'm up to speed? I downloaded the 4.6 update but when trying to install i find that Calamares "replace partition" doesn't really give me that option anymore. It wants to wipe my entire drive, including a large "data" partition where all my stuff resides. And yes, I'm one of those who has multiple linux distros installed. I haven't seen this before? Thanks for any suggestions.

Notice:
Existing installs that update will identify as Solus 4.5 and fresh installs with 4.6 ISO will identify as 4.6. This is due to the whole usr-merge nonsense that prevents us updating baselayout before the epoch repository is in place. You will just have to put up with this for now.

As of the sync on 2024-10-29, the above should no longer be an issue.

Andril As long as you have installed all normal updates via the Software Center, GNOME Software, Discover, or sudo eopkg up -y, your system will be the same as a fresh 4.6 installation.

"We have now reached the end of Stage 3 on our rollout plan: All users with an updated system now have a Usr-Merge’d system. Any users that create a fresh installation with today’s ISOs will also have a merged system. We expect stage 4 to complete Soon™️.
As a reminder, the Usr-Merge brings Solus in line with the compatibility efforts being spearheaded by Fedora and other distributions. More urgently, systemd requires the filesystem be merged for version 255."

4.5 I am user-mrgd, with the new 4.6 we are usr-mrged. nice. ahh I missed the part where systemd was the impetus of all this usr-merge stuff..probably in Evan's posted linked by David...

4.6 is going in a donated Sata SSD tonight. Good times!

I spent a year with them from v38-39. Stable as heck and dnf is easy but it never excited me.

Sebastian I guess Solus 5 will named "End Game", "Eternity" or something that tells us about the future of the distro

I have Budgie fully updated but still have fileroller am I missing something?

File Roller will not be removed automatically. It may also still be needed as a dependency of other installed software.

That would be correct. Just like in the past where nemo replaced nautilus for Budgie users, defaults are usually not forced on existing installs because we have no way of knowing if a user deliberately installed the alternative to our new default or not.

We can only use a "replaces" which forces the swap when the old package is not staying around, such as when switching to hard fork of a dead project. Otherwise Gnome users would be forced to switch too for no reason.

Axios if you still got file-roller you don't need engrampa. engrampa drags in xreader, doesn't it? I would avoid both if you are able to. glad to know that stuff is not on 4.6

EbonJaeger not a fan of apps that have their own pdf reader and /or terminal outside of system pdf reader etc. stuff that leads to duplicate default apps happens sometimes--see it more elsewhere to be clear I have not seen it here yet 🙂

brent Engrampa is an archive manager from the MATE project. XReader is a dedicated PDF reader application from the XApps project. I'm a bit confused because I don't see the connection.
