brent Going make it a little simpler for everyone download it-unzip it-goto that dir in terminal-
run install (if you dont run from terminal it wont install properly you cant double click from file manger either and have it install) and if you want uninstall do the same. (It will put icon in programs to)
Have done it many times never have used it in command line tho.

Axios Yes, there are lots of versions on the site so plenty of options. I might even follow @johano and move over to the terminal version. Very small and elegant. Made a tiny script to run it in terminal as a portable program. Ideal.

so I just said no. Double-clicking means 'open' so that's a weird message.

Yes. That was what I did wrong when I first used it. Never spent enough time reading the instructions (surely not) which is why I had the protracted instructions to create a portable program. To be fair the install method is a neat way to do this, but I like portable programs that I can carry about and run from a USB.

buzz yeah read directions. permissions were magically restored after moving (cp -r) from /Downloads to /Homeat this point I don't want to know but I wonder how much of this is real vs.gnome-disks which says everything is dying all the time...

So I can heal up the 241 bad sectors and be whole again? How? Or not? What does "remapped any time in the later use of the disk" mean? Like DD'd out?

I am reading their link: "Because weak sectors may not indicate real failure of the hard disk drive, they are not counted as seriously as real bad sectors or other attributes / issues. Anyway, these should be noticed also because they can cause serious problems if they are located in the administrative areas of the hard disk drive (boot record, MFT, critical system files) and/or if the number of weak sectors is high."

brent Those are good examples of a failing drive and a good drive.
With 12% it has been my experience time to replace.
One could remap sectors if the health was higher and prob use it some more but being that low nope.
(From what I see its just age)
(Other things get factored in for health other than bad sectors)
When you remap sectors you take the bad ones out of pool so when you do that disk capacity gets lower.

I like the gui because every disk maker determines smart setting alittle different and it was a hassle
to try to keep them all straight in my mind So I decide let the software makers keep that stuff straight..lol

pauses in things because of it.

Thanks for that great info. I also like the GUI. I also like that the app keeps that stuff straight vs manufacturers. What a great tool. 12% sounds awful. If the weak and bad sectors are causing loop: degrading performance by making platter work harder then it is time.
Platters are cheap, going to ebay an newish caviar or similar now.

In my own experience spinning platters are very prone to damage both from wear and from bumps and jolts. Laptop (2.5") drives tend to be more resilient to movement but generally have smaller cache and have slower access even when the speed is stated as being the same as 3.5" drives due to the smaller disk and therefore the lower relative speed that the disk surface travels beneath the pickup.
SSDs have no moving parts and can access files 6x faster. This means that a computer that previously took one minute to boot will start up in about 10 seconds. Programs launch much faster and your computer feels like a new one.

Now that is a tall order. Generally I don't like 'All-in-one' tools that claim to do this kind of stuff because they frequently use generic rules to look at device specific issues.
I tend to favour Dell laptops because they have good Linux support, they have high corporate usage so spares are easy to find and second hand machines can be picked up quite cheaply. Booting into the BIOS access screen additionally lets you open a full hardware diagnostic test utility which will do what you want.
There are probably other manufacturers that have similar feature but I have not seen any.

but like Buzz said they are all one program and just from a quick web search it still seems that way.
But for me I just keep an eye on memory and storage now days they seem be two common things
that crap out the most.

Completely agree with this. I was just about to suggest the same thing, but I decided to read the rest of the posts in the thread first, and you said it before I could. SSDs are so inexpensive these days, that it hardly makes sense to replace failing hard disks with other hard disks that will likewise fail eventually. It's just a matter of delaying the inevitable.

I don't know this for a fact, but I SUSPECT that the savings in energy costs over the lifetime of the device will pay for any difference in cost. So the much better performance is just a welcome side-effect.

Update. Terminal HDSentinel portable x64

Download this file and unzip
In the folder that has just been created. Right click and create an Empty File.
Open the file with a text editor and add the following;
#!/bin/bash sudo ./HDSentinel
Rename the file to "Run in Terminal" to remind you what to do.
Finally right click, select properties and 'Make Executable"
Rename folder to something like "HDSentinel Portable"
To run this on other computers you will need to run step 5 on each one.
It gives the same information as the GUI but is much smaller. Ideal to carry on a USB.

On average, SSDs consume around 2-3 watts during active use, while HDDs can consume up to 6-7 watts or more.
Kinda like going from the old light bulbs to led lighting.

it's my understanding that HDDs are built to last and SSD's were purposely made the opposite for a short life (planned obsolescence); built-in fragility as it were. I've done a lot of independent research. Why would I want to invest in that?

Apparently you might not want to. I'll gladly trade a slightly shorter lifetime for the benefits that SSDs provide during their lifetime. I haven't noticed that limitation yet, so I can't really relate to it. (Never had an SSD give up on me so far.)

For me, prefering HDDs sounds a lot like prefering horses to automobiles, because horses are involved in fewer accidents. I rather like my car.

It was bought when a drive of this type would cost about £100 and even at the time was considered unreliable. It ran as my main boot drive on Windows 7 for the lifetime of the OS before being retired into a testing role. It has had so many different OSs written on to it that I cannot keep count and it still has about 95% health.
Never had an SSD fail on me but seen plenty of hard drives fail badly.
For a laptop that relies on battery power and gets bumped about when in use an SSD is an obvious choice. Perhaps not so if you are running a desktop that never gets a knock.
Any "modern" computer is supplied with SSDs as standard, that is why they all seem so fast compared with the old ones fitted with rusty disks.
SSD lifespan is really pretty good but if you are worried about loosing your files then simply use your old style hard drive as backup media in a portable drive case. Storage that is not connected to your PC is a strong privacy feature, does not bog down your file system and is the first step in making one of those backups that we are all supposed to keep.

No, it's not really like that. The thing is you can buy SSDs which have a warranty of x TBW meaning the cells can be written y amount of times. Tests have shown that usually they last way longer then the warranty specifies. But yes the cells die after a lot of rewrites happen. But from my experience I never had to replace an SSD because of too many writes. I have customers who have SSDs in their backup systems writing a lot of GBs every day and they didn't die so far. I had SSDs though which failed from one day to the other due to controller not working anymore.
HDDs on the other hand don't have a "fixed" number of writes possible. But on the other hand sectors sometimes die randomly. You can have good luck with a HDD and have it without any bad sectors for a very long time, but sometimes you have bad sectors quite early. I had HDDs which had bad sectors after 2 years of use already.

SSDs we know the cells endure x amounts of writes vs HDD we don't know how long a sector will be able to read and write. And people rephrase this into: SSDs are built with planned obsolescence in mind and HDDs are not. From here comes this myth I think.

From my experience, SSDs are more reliable then HDDs. For the normal consumer anyway. I don't know how many times I had to support people because windows wasn't booting anymore and the reason often being dead sectors on HDDs. Dying SSDs on the other hand I had some, but it's really rare. But that's just my experience.

Anyway, always have backups for the non replaceable stuff!

Its mu understanding there are 2 kinds of SSDs. the one that is scuzzy-connected to the board, and the one that plugs right into the board. I heard the plugin one, (not mounted) is far better. what do you know about that?
