Anyone have user experience with Toshiba Satellite laptops?

relevant stuff BOLDED. This Celeron more robust (2.41Ghz vs 2.16). Bittersweet the memory is not upgradable (single slot).

But I thought you only had 2GB RAM?
If you have 4GB then a 120GB SSD and you would be good to go on Solus.

See if there is a YouTube tutorial for upgrading the RAM for your model number. Failing that there are plenty of memory sales sites that include individual tutorials that would include removing the keyboard if it was an option.

Anyway on serious note I have this that I use for browsing and just stuff it works just fine with 4g memory
and ssd only difference its prob newer than what you have.
But a great lounge machine.

performance was so shi*** I naturally assumed 2GB. And In BIOS I thought. I saw 2GB in specs as well for the old C-55s.
Should I go with the beefier of the two CPU's which is the 5296? I will YT for that info later (thank you Solus for maintaining yewtube!)

This has been a long discussion, probably should have got you to post inxi -F early on and then I would have had a good idea of what we were working with.
Right now Solus Budgie? What is slow? Time to boot, application launch time, website loading time, or struggling to run graphic animations? Some things are fixable by upgrading hardware or tweaking software but other combinations are going to result in a sale on Craigslist.

budgie. everything slow. typing. dragging windows. opening apps. loading a webpage. activating fields to write in. long spinning wheels. it's not like it's broken...it's more like fatigued and taxed...

..the laptop simply performs as a laptop would circa 1995.
That's the year I bought my first laptop: a Compaq size of a briefcase. It behaves exactly like using the Satellite--frustrating.

Axios An SSD makes everything quicker. If you just want to surf with it then a 120GB drive is all you need. Pick them up cheap as chips.

brent Might be circling now but you have checked Smart Data haven't you? Although probably would have taken ages to install if it was badly messed up.
A thought. BIOS often had a setting for something like Acoustic Disc Management. Worth a look as the Silence mode made everything move like a snail.

brent I must be missing something here, if Windows 10 was previously running on them (if not then why 4GB RAM) then Linux should fly. I have put Linux on a good number of really slow machines and it always worked OK, took a while to boot and big programs started slowly but typing and basic functions were fine.

If you get a chance could you post the result of sudo inxi -MCmGdz

That's been my experience in the past. I put Solus Plasma on a little Travelmate laptop that was Celeron-driven, and had 2 GB of RAM. It wasn't speedy, but it worked. The NVMe that it came with (32 GB) was too small to even update Windows 10, but it was plenty big enough for Solus.
