Printer missing from HP list

Axios that was "welcome to linux, now start hacking." me: "what's hacking?" I was in way over my head. but we made it work, thank you still! I needed that scanner for work and still do. @sebastian has the right idea---why did mine have so many /docs/share and crazy locations and symlinks to source package? I forgot. Would like to forget that. 🙂

@banger try the sourceforge tarball install. you can get help here. remove all the crap you installed before it. any folders in /cache and /config and eopkgs and sudo eopkg dc and sudo eopkg rmo just to clean the pipes. unless something is doing something positive.

oh yeah....

banger 697 is recommended by print settings but nothing comes out when I click test print. Even tried the 810 but no go. Think it has to do with the parallel port bit.

Interesting it was recommended. Empty page means no drivers. Sorry. sebastian is also right re: foomatic. Look in software center and make sure its installed. Mine is installed but I don't know if Solus default did that or I did that..

I didn't understand that parallel port part.

Parallel port is how the printer is connected to the PC. I found that Win 10 x64 installed the printer but did not communicate with it over the parallel port. Win 10 32 bit has no problems printing but it is so bloated now it struggles on my old machine and the video driver is from 2018 for win 32 bit no longer updated.

Just tried Solus in a VM on my Win 11 machine and added my HP D1400 series deskjet as a network printer which Solus found through samba share and it had drivers but at first it selected designjet 900. I scrolled through the list and found the d1400. Sent a test page to the printer, it moved the jets about but no test page. Tried several times but no go.

banger Sounds like it dont have right ppd file my old laser does that when that happend
had select a different laser in the same model and it works fine.

Jobs were submitted to the printer in Win 11 Queue but locked the printer up. Win 11 says printer error so something is not right with driver in Solus.

It's a no go just locks up the printer. 🙁

@Axios what's the name of that website that sells print drivers? you rec'd it to me once long ago. I'm at the bottom of trick bag.

this is the sourceforge tarball cracked open. in docs there is just plain non-distro instructions.
3 part process: configure, then compile and produce binaries, then install binaries.
It looks daunting as he** to me. But it could work.

brent All I can think of is turboprint but I looked they dont support 710 series of printer
either or the d1400.
Not saying this to be smart or anything just practical I guess and I understand everything involved about having computers and reason behind everything and why.
But sometimes stuff is just to old or to proprietary and it falls through the holes.
Anyhow sometimes its fun trying to make stuff work anyways.

Thought it might be the cups test page foobarred but printing from Libre Writer fails too with Ghostscript installed from snap and using the PPD generator above.

banger what do you do before you print something? go snap run ghostscript or something like that?
how did you install the ppd driver? did you leave it in its folder (or/downloads?) and make solus print settings manually find it in it's own folder and you added it yourself navigating to it via print dialogue settings? [that was the method I had to do my driver on another distro once].

When I installed Ghostcript I rebooted then went back to make sure it was installed and running. I just loaded the PPD file from downloads folder to the add printer dialog selecting add new settings from PPD file. I will try snap start ghostscript next time as run is bad syntax.

banger I don't know the snap synatax,Snap --helpmight tell you precisely. I was guessing. I don't think ghostscript would be running whenever you boot the computer unless you autostarted the app. I would expect you would make it run from the terminal or a desktop icon when you needed it.
Unless it's one of those weird things that launch themselves and run in the background every session like a service? Or a set of fonts? I do not know what ghostscript does exactly;

the ppd is installed right. Looks like a bogus ppd unless it needs something? Solus has foomatic installed already so it's not that. maybe time for a new printer 🙂

Yes ghostscript is a service and starts on boot but I cant get the damn thing to print.

the only other thing I'm reading consistently is the thing I never tried before. it says install ghost, the ppd, foomatic then configure thru cups/open source page

You can manage all the printers installed on your computer, adjust their settings, and even add new ones—all from this web interface. Note that this might be available on other computers on your network; if so, replace "localhost" with the relevant hostname or IP address."

I'm unfamiliar with this method; many swear by it.
edit: you have to have firewall off is also in my cups reading a lot

No go as you can see the filter failed. I also tried Ubuntu 24.04 from a live USB and that printed the test page fine. Arggggg.

banger what's Ubuntu have that Solus doesn't have? a bundled .deb with your crap in it is probably right.
I vaguely remember this being covered..

At this point all you can do is request the package at devtracker and throw yourself at the mercy of the devs. I have.
Have no idea what Filter Failed means. A missing component?

What's Solus based on? Zorin which works is based on Ubuntu 22.04. I have been googling filter failed but no fixes for my printer, some saying to downgrade ghostscript.
