Heya folks! It's update time! We have a relatively light list of updates this week. Of note, Vulkan was updated to 1.3.290. While there is nothing big in that version, we are hopeful that it will fix some loader issues that users have been experiencing lately.

For our AMD users, lact has been added to the repository. LACT is an AMDGPU configuration tool for Linux. Features include viewing information about the GPU, power and thermals monitoring, fan curve control, overclocking, and power state configuration.

We are looking for help in testing software center applications. The more testing these packages receive, the better the results will be when we switch to them by default. If you are interested in testing, install GNOME Software (gnome-software) or KDE Discover (discover), and start using them to install, remove, and update packages. If you encounter a problem, please look for open issues on our issue tracker, and open a new issue if one does not already exist for the problem. <!-- We have open issues for testing Software and Discover, both for Solus packages and flatpaks: Software (eopkg) Software (flatpak) | Discover (eopkg) Discover (flatpak) -->

Our Solus Package Taskforce:tm: (we're still workshopping the name) has been hard at work this week bringing the repository up to current standards:

Most of these tasks are beginner-friendly, and can be a great way to learn Solus packaging. We invite anyone that has the time and inclination to join us!

If you would like to join:

  1. Join Solus Packaging Room on Matrix
  2. Read and practice our packaging documentation
  3. Submit your first Pull Request. We recommend doing the homepage task
  4. Follow along the review process until your PR gets merged
  5. Continue on contributing!

That’s all for this week, folks! Come back next week for another round of updates!

How did the sync go for you?

This poll has ended.

all good after reboot, thanks all for update and sync.

you got your work cut out for you 🙂

Plasma laptop was smooth as usual ... gonna hit the sack now. I'll get the rest of them tomorrow.

    Regarding Discover:

    Software Center:

    Discover:

Software Center shows all installed packages and ends the Update scan.
Discover shows only 7 installed packages and stucks in update scan.

    all good
couldnt figure out how to install discover without updating so dont know what updating with discover is like yet

Update was very smooth on Plasma. Thank you.
Have been running Discover since beginning of June. Like the way it is travelling.
There have been times around the start of July when Discover seemed to get it's feet tangled and either couldn't find software and searched continuously or could not install all the software and reported an error. A simple CLI uninstall and reinstall of the package backend fixed it and everything has been sweet for me since.

All good on my Gnome machine - thank you.

BuzzPCSOS A simple CLI uninstall and reinstall of the package backend fixed it and everything

Can you go more in details please?

        Update:

        mkl@mkl-solus ~ $ sudo eopkg rm discover
        mkl@mkl-solus ~ $ sudo eopkg it discover

surprising that it doesn't work the first time you install it. That you have to install it, uninstall it and then install it again

AlphaElwedritsch My bad, after checking I realise that I used SC not the CLI.
Discover was still quite a new addition to my laptop so I expected some rough edges. Can't remember what the exact fault was, it was either having trouble finding software that I knew was in the repository or it failed to install some packages during an update followed by a 'Send a bug report' message, which I would have done.
I closed Discover and ran SC. Searched for Discover but the nearest match was (and still is) PackageKit Backend, which integrates packages into Discover. I had intended to uninstall Discover and then reinstall. I took a chance, uninstalled PackageKit Backend instead and then reinstalled.
It might have been coincidence but Discover worked fine after that. This also happened on another laptop and the same 'fix' was just as successful.
I'm afraid it was not reported on the bug tracker most bad things that happen on computers are down to my operating technique so I don't get concerned when stuff doesn't work quite as expected.
I hope that this information was what you needed.

I'm trying out LACT, but when I try to enable overclocking, I get this error:

          io.github.lact-linux.desktop[4021]: 2024-07-27T10:35:55.704087Z INFO lact_client: connecting to service at "/run/lactd.sock"

For a last few updates firefox|amdgpu|VAAPI keep segfault making whole system to freeze.

            This is a known issue.
            And this.

Unfortunately, the problem with VAAPI segfaults is still there. Other than that, all is good.

endumiuz You have to enable it using this kernel parameteramdgpu.ppfeaturemask=0xffffffff. Here is how to add parameters on Solus.

            This topic is interesting.
As for me, I installed Gnome Software Center.

What I do: when Solus Software Center notifies me of updates, I process them in this application; then, I look in Gnome Software Center and it happens that it proposes me some (often, system updates) and I validate them.
Is this the right way to proceed or should I only use Gnome Software Center now?

I also noticed that, whether for updates or to install new software, I did not have to enter any password.

Another thing: I recently installed the Nvidia System Monitor application; however, I noticed that it installed an obsolete dependency: org.kde.Platform (version 5.15-22.08 -> end of life) while there is another one (version 5.15-23.08) ; so I uninstalled this software.

Lucien_Lachance just to confirm, with discover i can install and uninstall anything i want without being asked for passwords. NOT flatpaks, but stuff from solus repo.
            uninstalling discover

edit: might it be a kwallet thing? i never used kwallet i but i recall touching its configuration settings after i installed solus plasma
