I use Libreoffice Calc (spreadsheets) for work, so I've always got one open. The last month or so (can't put my finger on when it started), when I save it takes a bit, then the spreadsheet locks up. I can't enter or edit or do anything. I can however close it normally, and it does save. I can then re-open it and continue. Everything seems to work find, no other issues, just weird lockup when saving (every time).

Anyone else run into this? Version 24.2.2.2 (also I'm on Plasma)

LibreOffice has been updated in unstable to 24.2.4.2. Thanks @algent !
Anyone in unstable, feel free to see if Calc behaves itself when saving files.

I tested with a spreadsheet that had exhibited the problem for me before. I was able to save and keep working with it, so it's fixed on my system.

zmaint The last month or so (can't put my finger on when it started), when I save it takes a bit, then the spreadsheet locks up. I can't enter or edit or do anything. I can however close it normally, and it does save. I can then re-open it and continue.

if it locks up and freezes then how does it save? how are you able to use X to close? an app half alive and half dead? (I've seen weirder). or are you just saying the lock up is temporary and takes a looooong time?

I cannot replicate in Libre/Budgie but I have anecdotes from memory when this happened to me:
    1) I had trouble saving something for a while and it wound up being dying hardware but I was running solus on a usb stick which are built not to run OSs...

    2) As I got wise to freezing I would run sys monitor in background and see what would happen before a freeze. one time Firefox was just spawning out of control entries that ate up all the memory and the next time another app strangled by system.

tldr--this is a crapload of words to say run sys monitor when your app is open

zmaint This only happens to me, when it opens .xlsx (Microsoft Excel) file that contain a lot data(sheets, column, rows, etc). An .ods(OpenDocument Spreadsheet) file never cause this problem.

alfisya That may be it, I use the microsoft formats because everyone I send them to uses Excel... Didn't do it before though, it is new. Well, the x works to close it. I usually get tired of waiting and just close and re-open. I'll try to wait it out next time and see if it's really hung or just taking forever.

zmaint If you want better compability, use OnlyOffice for microsoft files. It is available via flathub (might as well try Gnome Software or Discover to install it graphically 😄 ). You can always works with ODS then send them XLSX file, it is annoying tho and might open up more trouble that it is worth.

I switched off Libreoffice for a while because of this problem. There is some theory out there that it may be related to Libreoffice having to wake up printers for some setting before saving. Otherwise no clue.

I just did new install of Solus and am trying Libreoffice again and so far no problem (knock on wood).

edit: Im using ods files. If I was using .xlsx files I would use Onlyoffice. I used this for a couple of weeks but I had a lot of problems with colour themes that are critical for my workflow.

brent I waited about an hour this morning and the spreadsheet never became responsive again. Libreoffice itself didn't lock up, I could close it without any issues. I'll try looking at the system monitor next go. It doesn't bog the system down, everything else is super snappy, and my fans stay quiet, so it's probably just something they changed to make it hate the .xlsx format.

zmaint I would go to help and (start in safe mode) then see if problem
              persists.

I always wanted to try out OnlyOffice but held back because it wasn't available on our official repos.

How's your experience with OnlyOffice, as opposed to LibreOffice?
I'm curious to know if there's any drawbacks to using OO instead of LO.

              thank you.

I have no issues with OO I use it daily in my work, the interface I find more user friendly than LO.

Give it a try you can always uninstall it if you are unhappy with it,

snowee I only use Onlyoffice when the file I work with just doesn't play well with Libreoffice. It works best with the microsoft document that has weird formatting (especially MS Word). Honestly, I don't really like the interface. Sometimes it feels slugish to navigate around a document. Maybe I got used to Libreoffice, but that's my experience withe Onlyoffice (Which I don't have installed right now because I have not encountered troublesome file in sometime).

Also about why it was not in the repo. We have a package request for it here, but their licensing scheme is annoying. (Disclaimer: I am not a lawyer or anyone practicing law, so my interpretation might be wrong). Sure it is AGPL 3.0, but they include exception that forbid anyone that redistribute it to use their trademark. So, in a sense if we want to include it in our repo (redistribute), we have to strip down all of their trademark from the software (logo, name, etc). So, the chance it is included in Solus repo in slim to none.

Now, you might ask: Why it is in Flathub? The answer: they just repackage the official prebuilt binary, which we can do(technically). But then it will not have any benefit of being a native package. So it is what it is.

                brent Discovered 2 things.

It does not use any more resources than normal and again Libreoffice is responsive, its just that the sheet locks up.

Lastly, it only does it when I choose "save as". If I just save, its fine, I can go right back to editing. Unfortunately I use most of my spreadsheets as templates, so 99% of the time I'm doing save as.. and using a new date or another customer's name.

zmaint let me know and I can troubleshoot and help you debug. I have my own Libre Office problem no one in the whole forum could replicate, or dev tracker so I feel you with this annoying stuff.

zmaint so it's probably just something they changed to make it hate the .xlsx format.

I hope you get a confirmation about that then it could be one step closer to updating

brent I may very well take you up on it. Much appreciated!

I downloaded a 28thousand row excel test file (simple) edited it and saved it both ways does take a tad but worked.
Will try a template next if I can.
Edited template and saved fine to.
                    Interesting.

                    Found post online
Go in to (tools-options-general) and try changing the (open/save dialog) and see if anything changes.
It just changes the popup box when you go save as.

                    (just something simple to try)

Axios I'm going thru your profile link later tonight from two posts ago. its fascinating the libre folk were ready for all the potential problems and compiled a pretty thorough troubleshooting guide.

brent Yup it was interesting I just renamed the current profile dir and Libre
made a whole new default profile.

                        7 days later

TraceyC Sweet. I'm doing last Friday's updates now, not sure if that's in it yet or not but can't wait to get this fixed🙂
