To prove hardware vs software it would be worthwhile booting from Solus Live and seeing if things still get very hot.
A check on Hardware Drivers might indicate a required update for your graphics card.
Use the built-in System Monitor (or equivalent) to look for what is hogging all the CPU and GPU cycles.
Make sure that cooling air flow is not restricted. Blow or brush clear.
Check state of thermal compound on CPU and GPU.
Good luck
Make sure the about:support Troubleshooting Information page in Firefox reports the VP9 and AV1 codecs as supported in Codec Support Information section of the page.
If it does not, then there is something wrong with a hardware decoders.
SilverBird775 Both vp9 and av1 show this avh8 is fine
Axios
That is an expected problem, it explains the excessive heating.
For a clear indications you should allows codecs to load first, for this open/refresh about:support while pausing the youtube video, then you may see the actual used codecs summary:
In your case VP9 and AV1 Hardware Decoding is expected to be unsupported, thus causing extra heat for extra work the CPU has to do.
That is your software issue then. I had my own share not so long ago:
https://discuss.getsol.us/d/10335-sync-updates-for-week-7-2024/20
SilverBird775 Thanks for the reply Yes I happen to bring that screen up and vp9 and av1
was unsupported.
I enabled (media.ffmpeg.vaapi.enabled) seemed to help with the problem.
Never had this issue before.
The (media.ffmpeg.vaapi.enabled) helped alot on firefox cpu usage from 80-85% down to 25-30%
But interesting enuf Have been using alot late at nite for monitoring world stuff sometimes
not plugged it gets low and plug in laptop so it starts charging (Hense my extra heat.)
So Moral of story dont use while charging for long periods..
Should not be issue but is at least part of it.
Axios It sounds like you are mostly sorted but here are a few other things to consider to keep running cooler.
If you are using an intel chipped pc have you got thermald
running in the background as this can make reasonable impact on heat.
More and more internet movie sites are hosting much higher resolution films which will really warm things up if you are on older firmware (pc originally ran win7 or earlier) so that is worth considering. Sometimes there is an option under site settings to turn the resolution down to 720p or below which can make a huge difference.
BuzzPCSOS Thermald seems to even temps out I noticed there is a config file may
look at it sometime.
Note thanks never needed it before lived through the Lap burner mac days sure I can survive this...lol
I kicked my profile down to balanced instead of perfomance help alot
I selected myself as best answer (But both had info that helped.) did not want seem like I was pref one over the
other..lol
Thanks
