Adding a Station to Radiotray-NG

I spent an obsessive journey wanting to add radio stations to my radiotray-ng. It took days.
It took days because nobody is giving anything away, not even streams. Radio stations already in VLC or Rhythmbox won't be ported to radiotray-ng. Also radiotray-ng prefers the archaic .pls format (and .m3u).

If the mods leave this post up, I did find a legal open source site:

I typed 'funk' into their search bar and picked a German funk station:

clicked on the title it took me to the info page:

I wanted the station Name and URL to paste into radiotray-ng's Bookmarks Editor where I pulled down ADD a station:

You heard that right. Much old info for radiotray-ng has one appending the bookmarks.conf or bookmarks.json. You don't need to do that anymore. Use the GUI editor shown above.

saved and added:

save bookmarks editor (in gui). repopulate bookmarks editor (in gui). and you see it in the pulldown station
list:

When you play a station you get a desktop notification to confirm:

I'm Funking out as you can see.
I just added a couple stations, I'm not greedy. But I did bookmark this open source resource.

Ha ha ha, that's funny as I live in Germany and that supposed funk radio station has the word "Funk" in its name as "Funk" is a German word for broadcast or wireless transmission.
It is short for "Rundfunk" meaning radio station (literally maybe something like "broadcast all around").

The station Deutschlandfunk is a state funded radio station that broadcasts high quality stuff like classical or jazz music, literature, radio plays etc..

You should give it a try some time!

SOLUSfiddler I thought it was talky as hell! And I thought I was hearing spoken dialogue....I did hear a jazz song or two...where can I get some German funk? 🙂

Go to https://laut.fm/ and type funk into the search box.
You'll find quite a few radio stations that play funk music.
"Path through the Forest" ain't one of 'em, punk ain't funk!

Axios HAM and shortwave related somehow? wish I could shortwave in linux without a crapload of special stuff like a bunch of hardwares.
flashback as a young teen. my dad got some 40-pound old zenith shortwave from somewhere. big steel antenna. size of one of those small TVs...AM/FM not really important, just a gigantic analog band that went left to right.

many nights in the backyard just listening to the magic. barge traffic and ship communications, endless morse code signals, mysterious voices then beeps, radio programs, foreign nation radios, boats, distant radio stations and talk, and generally a weird weird experience but you get hooked...

I honestly don't think you can replicate the magic of Shortwave or HAM without an analog setup but that might be prejudice or sentiment since I never tried it the 'digital' way,

I wonder if I went back in time how similar or different the experience would be? It was 10X more gripping than a novel or a movie but much less accesible🙂
