Importing Icon Sets: how do you all feel about importing in System Files?

Short version:
I fell hard for the Humanity Icon set and installed it in Budgie years ago. I moved it into usr/share/icons.

(Thanks to @SethStorm666 ) I found a couple icon themes I like at Gnome Looks. So I downloaded them.

With Humanity I think I was reckless, but these are different times.

QUESTION: for you icon importers, how do you square it in your head to move files from the wild into your/root? Just doesn't seem sensible or best practices.

But I need alternate points of view because some of these icon sets are awesome🙂.

brent, you can keep themes and icon sets, in your home folder at ~/.local/share/themes and ~/.local/share/icons folder respectively. If the folders don't exist just create them. An advantage of this is if you have to do a reinstall, and have $HOME backed up, or on a different partition to root, they'll still be there without having to look for them again. Same applies to custom fonts: ~/.local/share/fonts

Thank you both. I use /local for wallpapers because I can make Budgie go there manually.

So maybe this is a Budgie question?

is ~/.local where Budgie is looking for ^^^ the icons? I always thought Budgie Settings were looking in user/share?

brent Budgie's theme detection is a bit more complicated. I think it scans all user and system XDG data directories looking for directories ending in themes, .themes, icons, and .icons.

Because something tagged off-topic is not inherently a question. It needs the "How Do I" tag for the best answer extension to be enabled. Where as all support requests have it enabled by default. Anyway fixed now.
