Does Solus Have Any Crypto Package Policy?

If I can recall correctly, I believe I remember a different distro (Void maybe) having a policy about excluding crypto related packages, does Solus also have something like that? I'm thinking of getting into crypto and am looking for a wallet [preferably one that works well with a hardware wallet (I heard of one called Exodus + Trezor)]. Is there any chance of something like this being included in the repo? Anyone have any knowledge of this stuff? I'm very green to crypto.

Most of my investments are in the stock market, mostly tech stocks because that's where my experise is. But, like you, I became very interested in cryptocurrencies when my friends couldn't stop talking about them.

I installed Coinbase, which has a very good reputation, and I've been very happy with it. Check out coinbase.com. It's not available as an app in the repo, but it's an html application, so you install it into your favorite browser. As an experiment, I bought just a few thousand dollars of three currencies - Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), and a little less of Dogecoin (DOGE). I bought that last one because Elon Musk is a big fan of it. (Dogecoins were $0.08 each when I started this a few months ago, and today they're $0.18.)

Coinbase has made it easy for me to learn a lot in a brief time. Highly recommended, If you're not ready to actually install something right now, just do a web search for Coinbase.

We have Bisq in repo, not a wallet. I updated it a few months ago. Honestly, it is a pain to compile and nobody has stepped up to maintain it.

From what I see, unless someone stepped to also maintain the package, it probably won't get included to repo. There is many crypto wallet on Flathub, AFAIK.

pacer Don't get into cryptocurrency, it's a scam. Cryptocurrency tokens have no value, but people speculate that the perceived value will go up and that they'll be able to profit later, but it's just gambling and you'll probably lose your money. Because the value is essentially based on how strongly people believe in it, you get all this cult behaviour like trying to promote a token to anyone who'll listen, and shunning critics. the reason you've heard it promoted so much is that the people pushing it have a stake in crypto and thus a vested interest in driving the value up, not for any carefully considered reason.

It's also conceptually incoherent, since people insist it's a "currency" but you can't really buy things with it (apart from buying drugs on the dark web I guess?) and it's a huge pain to do that - by and large it's treated as a speculative investment, with the hope that the price will rise - i.e. if it 's a currency then it's a deflationary one, which makes no sense. if real currencies kept rising in value, we'd be heavily disincentivised from spending and the economy would tank. that's the reason that inflation exists.

sorry for being a downer, it's nice to imagine that you might get rich from one weird trick or something, but if you'd posted the topic "should I go to Vegas and bet all my savings on red?" my answer would be no as well. I think it's important to hear both sides on these things. Best of luck to you.

WetGeek Nice to hear from ya. I am actually asking about something kind of different. Coinbase is a cryptoexchange where you can buy and sell crypto. They are centralized and gov regulated, at least in the US. I am asking about local wallets. Your crypto is being held in your Coinbase wallet which is a major security issue. Ask anyone, they will tell you to get your crypto off of the exchange asap. Exchanges are highly targeted and you really don't have ownership of your crypto if it is on the exchange in their wallet (Kind of like "buying" a digital movie, do you even really own it?" Local wallets allow you to get it off the exchange and gives you more control/ownership over your crypto. If I do buy crypto, I am 100% buying a hardware wallet, a physcial wallet that stores your keys, like Trezor (look it up) to keep my crypto "offline". I was asking about the repo because Trezor has a software suite to interact with the wallet. Exodus is a software wallet that has Trezor integration. Both have signed Linux releases that could potentially be added to the repo for easier management. Hope all this makes sense. I only say Trezor because its software/firmware is open source, it's affordable, a big name, and it can store thousands of different coins. There are many other software/hardware wallets, I was just giving an example. I just didn't know is Solus is open to crypto related packages because I've seen other distros not like them. Figured I would ask on forum for everyone's input on the matter as opposed to opening Github package requests/issues.

We have a different outlook on investing, obviously, so I don't really have much to tell you. But since you know the names you're looking for, just use sudo eopkg info NAME to check wiether they're in the repo. Or maybe just use sudo eopkg sr crypto or something similar.

I'm not sure how you get the idea that I don't own the cryptocoins that I've bought. At any time I want to, I can convertt them to US dollars and transfer them to my savinngs account, Or that I don't own the videos I've bought and are now on the Videos share of my NAS, but I'm not interested in debating the matter. I wish you well, and I wish I could help you more, but you'll need to chat with someone who knows more about your style of crypto.

We have a Package Inclusion Policy, but we don't prohibit any particular class of package aside from very server specific applications.

More practically, we exclude packages we consider to be too niche, and as alfisya alluded to we are always looking for dedicated maintainers for packages with small audiences.

I am most definetely not putting my life savings into crypto. I'm not hanging on every Elon Tweet waiting for DOGE to hit a million. I don't necessarily agree that crypto is a scam however. I do believe there is value to crypto and it's only going to become more essential.

I agree with this for the most part. Are there people all over the place trying to scam off of crypto? Yes. I don't subscribe to a thousand YouTube crypto channels waiting to hear about the next big coin. However I do think there is a difference in pump-and-dump shit/meme coins where 99% of people end up getting felted for buying into the hype and more serious projects/uses. That's why it is advisable to stick to major coins, like BTC/Eth. I think that maybe for most people, getting into crypto is no better, if not worse then gambling/stock trading but I know my limits and have some $$ to play around with.

I think you made a good post and most people should probably stay away from crypto all together. I don't know if this is the place to debate the ethics/psychology/politics behind crypto though, lol. I'm not a crypto expert/sleuth by any means, just want to gamble a little/ have some fun with it and see what happens is all.

I agree with your post almost entirely. I never gamble with more than I can afford to lose, and I decided early on to apply that philosophy to investing in cryptocurrency. When I was forced to take a required minimum distribution (RMD) from my IRA - whether I wanted it or needed it - I decided to check out crypto coins with some of it.

I've learned a lot and had a bit of fun with ETH, BTC, and DOGE, but if they all went to 0 value, it wouldn't affect my lifestyle. And if they all prosper, so much the better. I expect my experience will probably fall somewhere in the middle. I neither expect to get rich nor poor with cryptocurrency, and I'm not at all sorry I invested a bit in it.
