Hi everyone!

My kids have been playing with my computer in their own account and now in my account when I move the mouse wheel the volume increases or decreases instead of the screen scrolling.

I cannot understand why they were able to change the behaviour of the mouse in my account too (should not happen under Linux) but... does anybody knows how to bring this configuration back?

Thanks!

  • I found the solution!!!! It turns out that holding the DPI button of the mouse for about 5 seconds changes the mode of the mouse wheel!!!!

Hope it helps somebody else. I was getting crazy!!!

I suspect it's a feature of the mouse you're using, not the OS or the DE. Thus, their account or your account doesn't make a difference. On my Solus Plasma computers, that's a standard feature, but apparently DEs may differ on that.

WetGeek I am using Budgie... In the budgie configuration options there is no option to change this behaviour. I think Plasma has a lot more configuration options...

That's undoubtedly true, but even Plasma doesn't have a setting that allows turning this feature off. It's just a standard feature - it's simply the way the scroll wheel works when the mouse is pointing at the speaker volume control. Perhaps if I used the same mouse you use, holding its "DPI button" down might have the same effect here.

And this is not only true of Plasma. I just tested Budgie, GNOME, Xfce, Plasma, and MATE. With all of those Solus DEs, if you put the mouse pointer on the "speaker" icon in the system tray, and spin the mouse wheel, the volume changes, and there's a visual indication of the % from muted to 100%.

Apparently your mouse has a way to switch that feature on and off, and it's currently turned on.

EDIT: Please realize that I'm not doubting what you said happened. I'm sure it's happened exactly as you described it, both here and on the Mint forum. I'm just pointing out that your solution probably applys only to users who have the same model of mouse you use, while others don't need a special mouse to get this normal behavior.

The normal behaviour is that the mouse scroll scrolls the page if you are reading this page, for example. In my case, if you press the DPI button of the mouse (my mouse is a very normal one) for about 4-5 seconds, this behaviour will change to increase and decrease the volume. If I put the mouse pointer on the "speaker" it is clear that the spin the mouse wheel will increase or decrease the volume.

I just didn't know that this was possible and that this change will affect all users of the computer. I thought it will only affect the user that changed the behaviour. IMHO should not happen, but I am not the specialist...

I just wanted to write it in case anybody else has the same problem...

        Thanks!

I learned about meese buttons..lol I use simple ole meeses that are old no fancy features..
They are going be a system device so going act the same who ever is logged in.

rjuarezp Rest assured this information was indeed helpful to another human being. You solved my problem.
          Thank you!
