I do not have or use HP printers so can not give inside information but....
The HP website indicates use of Hplip which should come installed as standard in Solus. However searching the Software Center for Hplip shows two entries, one that is installed and one that is not. It might be worth installing the missing one and trying again after a PC restart.
Good luck.

Try installing hplip and hplip-drivers. You can search that in Software center or just use this command :

    sudo eopkg it hplip hplip-drivers

Then use system settings to add printer or newly installed 'HP Device Manager' whichever easier. Cheers!

Yes, I've installed (and uninstalled) both (hplip and hplip-drivers) repeatedly, but still no luck. What else can I do?

BuzzPCSOS I tried downloading hplip directly from the HP website (version 3.23.12; Solus Software Center has version 3.23.5), but was unable to install that version due to information that gcc cannot be used in Solus.

I have also tried installation via CUPS Web Interface with the same result. If using HP Device Manager it will result: "Device communication error (5012)", if using CUPS Web it will result: "Pending", and using System Settings it will result: "Paused" or "Filter failed". Maybe I should try another distro?

        itilsenli network or usb?
Have you ever used this printer on linux?
hplip supports your printer from 3.19.6 up and is fully supported.
Not sure its a hplip issue or solus

          Axios just USB connection.
I have tried printing with Fedora before. Difference is in Fedora this printer is detected and configured automatically while in Solus it is not detected except after installing hplip. But it seems that the configuration is wrong or there is a conflict between hplip and CUPS, I don't know.

itilsenli With hplip if it isnt working (working with printer) the system printer isnt going to (it works through hplip)
Like printing test page from hplip (if that is working you need look at system printer settings)
Under system printer settings connections should be to hplip (Not usb)

If that looks right prob something with hplip if your getting comm error
What you might try is when finding and setting up printer do it manually find the id of printer and enter it
            see what happens that way

I have to do mine manually.
Once hplip is working it works good gives more control over printer.
Just some stuff to look at.

Note I install hplip and when I start it (first time) install from that screen I have old laser it always gets the model
wrong so I have to change that then it works fine.
It installs printer into system printers

According to HP website, Smart Tank 500 is supported by hplip since version 3.19.6. Most probably you haven't installed the binary plug-in which is required for that model among many others. You can install the binary plugin with the command hp-plugin on terminal.

Sorry, guys. Thank you for being willing to provide some solutions that might help my problem. Unfortunately, nothing worked and I decided to quit because it was too much of a headache for my Linux inexperience. I really like Solus but if it doesn't help me in my work, I'll have to switch to another distro. Maybe I'll come back another time if something works. Thank you.

itilsenli It should work but you got to do what your comfortable with.
