  • Linux firmware is weird today. It's downloading at about 80kb/s, has failed twice. Everything else is downloading at normal speed, including other Solus install/upgrade files (to date) and that matches with the speed test of my broadband connection.

I notice it has failed to fetch https://cdn.getsol.us/repo/shannon/l/linux-firmware/linux-firmware-20250211-88-1-x86_64.eopkg

  • Ah Edge ....
"Do you want to install a new browser"
"Are you sure you don't want Edge to be the default"
"There are 137 registered mimetypes that use Edge, sadly you have to set them all individually for technical reasons we have just made up"
"Edge is a secure browser, so your browser is a security risk"
"Edge is no longer the default browser. To continue with your current browser enter the complete works of William Shakespeare in Hebrew backwards, or to switch to Edge press Return. This computer will not boot until you have decided which"
"Use Edge or we'll send the boys round"
"Edge as default is a prerequisite to decoding all your encrypted documents which we sneaked in in para 317 of the latest EULA change"

    • Possibly the most pointless application ever 🙂

      Thanks for all your work.

I sometimes hear people saying Solus repos are a bit lacking, but actually the only thing I've missed that isn't really obscure (and isn't in other repos either !) or commercial is 64tass. I'm away for a week next week, but when I get back I'll see about learning to package things myself. That might be a good start point, as it's a doddle to install, so presumably would be a simple thing to package.

    • I just bought a brother laser AIO (DCP3520) and it just works. However, that's pushing twice the price of yours.

You've two considerations ; refill cost and driver support.

HP used to be brilliant, 20 years ago I never even looked at another printer company, but now they have a reputation as a gang of thugs. But if you can find a good one not scamming on ink maybe.

I tend to agree with @WetGeek , I've never had one of these but I have considered them several times, I think Linux support is pretty decent (you'd have to check) and they're economical to run. I've owned 2 or 3 Epson Inkjets in the past and they've worked fine.

    • Hi. I'm just switching back to Solus after some time away. I notice that the upgrades are now really quite significant for 4.5, in that they're not much smaller than the actual distribution. (I do understand why).

Anyway, I note that the eopkg files are cached in /var/cache/eopkg/packages. With Arch Linux you could just get their equivalents (zst files) stick them in /var/cache/pacman/pkgs and the installer would check those first, so you didn't have the slow download if you had multiple machines, slow internet etc. Any new ones were just downloaded as normal. This actually should work better on Solus because of the Friday batch update thing.

Will this work the same on Solus ? Can I just copy all the eopkg files there ?
