Hi Solus forums. This is my first post here and I hope someone can give me a hand with an issue I'm having.
I regularly use a piece of software designed for Windows that requires the *ntlm internet framework (or whatever you'd call it). Whether installing through Wine itself or through Playonlinux (which is my preferred method) I also end up being unable to update the app due to the inability to utilize *ntml. When I've tested it on multiple other distros, I end up having to install several other packages and libs to get it to work right.
I'm usually shown a message about the software not being able to update because 'gnutls
' isn't installed, even when I know it certainly is! After much experimenting on my own using different distros, I've found that in addition to 'gnutls
', different methods for accessing ntlm update are required. I'll share what they are by distro I know it works in below. * Note: after the installation commands, I include; playonlinux
so POL launches via the terminal and I can easily see the output when/if this error occurs.
On Arch/Manjaro, these are...
yaourt -Sy playonlinux wine winetricks wine-mono wine_gecko gnutls libtasn1 haskell-gnutls libcurl-gnutls python2-gnutls lib32-gnutls lib32-libcurl-gnutls lib32-libtasn1 python-ntlm-auth python-requests-ntlm python2-ntlm-auth ; playonlinux
On Debian/Ubuntu, these are...
sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386 ; sudo apt update ; sudo apt install playonlinux wine winbind winetricks python-ntlm ruby-ntlm ; playonlinux
Using Solus, so far my usual tricks don't seem to work at all. I've considered using VirtualBox or Gnome-Boxes, to install an extremely light-weight linux distro I know can run the software; but that seems a little silly to me.
Can anyone lend me a hand here?
If it matters, the program I'm attempting to install and use is HeroLab, a character creation software I and my friends use to make Pathfinder RPG characters for our TTRPG. It also has the wonderful added feature which enables DMs like myself to completely customize the enemies they're going to be having combat-encounters with. Additionally, I can also make many different NPCs for them them interact with in and outside of combat-encounters. I know it seems silly for this kind of software to be part of my "Essential Group of Software", but without I would not be able to enjoy my hobby I've had for almost 25 years nearly as much as I do while using it. To my knowledge it does not off an offline update method where I could download some files off the web and import them into HL. If I could do that, this question would be moot. I'd have to go through extra steps, of course, but the fact remains that with Solus I simply cannot update the software whenever it needs updating several times per month.
Thank you so much!
Yours,
