I attempted to install Solus (both Budgie and Plasma in case there was a problem with one of them) and received the following error during boot. The system was unable to recover from the AMDGPU fatal error.

This install is going on a separate SDD which was cleaned, existing partitions etc removed and pre-formatted EXT4.

The hub 8-0:1-0 is a common error with the B650 series chipsets and most distros ignore the error. The only exception I have found are the *BSD's. The bluetooth error is a new one for me, but I removed this by disabling bluetooth in the bios and trying the install again.

It appears that Solus is a no-go with the AMD RX 7800 at least for now. I have looked for a work around, but unless I missed something (it is possible) I will have to wait until there is an updated ISO.

This is my inxi from my Arch install.

Thanks for any input, good, bad or otherwise. 🙂

  • ReillyBrogan I tried it several ways with no joy.

Then ... after a short nap and a fresh cup of coffee I found a work around. I enabled the IPU on the Ryzen CPU in BIOS and installed it with one monitor using the internal Ryzen GPU. After installation I immediately rebooted, updated the system and switched back to the RX 7800 XT. Now it is all running as intended. So all the libraries, drivers, etc are available, you just need to get to the initial update for it all to come together.

It's amazing how much clearer things become after a short nap and fresh coffee! 🙂

    Thanks!

Solus 4.4 comes with the 6.3 kernel which should have full support for RDNA3 GPUs. The 7800xt is a newer SKU though, I suppose it's possible that the firmware package is missing blobs for it or that the kernel doesn't have the PCI-e mappings.
