  • Laptop power management issues after last kernel update

AMD Ideapad 3 and a Dell all Intel laptop. Same issue with both.

On AC all plugged in USB devices work fine. On the HP laptop it has an integrated NIC and it works fine, the AMD laptop uses a USB Ethernet dongle and it also works fine. When power is unplugged, all the USB devices are turned off on both laptops and the integrated NIC is turned off. I've tried messing with power profiles but the only thing that gets everything working again is plugging them back into AC and rebooting.

Anyone else run into this? Any fixes?

    There is nothing in the power settings in Plasma that I see that would shut off USB devices on battery. There are a couple of other possible culprits.

    1. Do you have tlp installed? You can check in the Software Center.
    2. Did you ever confirm if there was a setting in EFI / BIOS that might be setting USB ports to unpowered on battery?

    I just tested with the same kernel on the Plasma DE. I had a wireless mouse dongle and external drive connected via USB on my laptop. After unplugging the laptop from the dock (so running on battery), both devices were still active.

    What desktop is this, Budgie? I wonder if there's a setting that can be changed. You might also look in the laptop's EFI / BIOS.

    Another thing to check would be dmesg. Run it before unplugging from AC and then after, and see what stands out.

      TraceyC I forgot to say that both laptops are Solus Plasma and neither had any issues prior to the update. After unplugging them to force it to go to battery there's about a 30s lull where things continue to work and then all the peripherals are off. Two completely different laptops, the only commonality is the last update.

      I can check dmesg on mine. The other laptop is in a different state. I'll ask my friend to run it. He's elderly, but I've been able to walk him through command line stuff before with no trouble. I remoted in yesterday and confirmed what it's doing. I then fired up my laptop to see if it was something in power settings and it was doing the exact same thing.

          zmaint Thanks for the additional detail. I re-tested, but this time left the laptop undocked for a couple of minutes. The USB devices were still accessible.

                  Nothing in there looks USB related or unusual. The next thing to check would be systemd journalctl logs. You can check logs from the current boot with:

                  journalctl -b

                  You can get logs starting from a specified date and time with (substitute the time you want):

                  journalctl --since "2023-11-01 17:15:00"

                  So you can:

                  Restart the system, and get logs from that boot.
                  Then disconnect the system from AC, wait, and get logs from just before the disconnect.

                  Hopefully this will give us more to go on.

                    Any advice? I'm still having issues with this on both laptops. Appears to be a kernel related issue with USB stuff. I just saw a Youtube video today that highlighted a known issue with Logitech USB devices in kernels 6.2 and up. Curious if this may be related?

                      zmaint Are you using that addon power manager sitting here cant remb the name..lol
                      (Tl) or something haha If you are disable it and check things then.
                      Read stuff online while it was causing usb problems for some.

                          Axios Nope, just Solus Plasma on both, so the built in KDE power manager thing.

                              zmaint I tried funny you have problems on 2 seperate computers.

                              Trouble with usb devices they are polled devices and with just that you can see the issues that could arise.
                              Back in the day I had a multimedia keyboard polling unkown throwing glitches in video editing caused me to
                              go buy a mac..lol (just useless info I am full of it)..lol

                                Updated. Still doing it. My USB shuts off about 30-45s after switching to battery and the only way to get it back on is to reboot. I'm assuming at this point that it's something in KDE power management? Is there a terminal command to turn USB power back on? Is there a way to temp disable the KDE power management to see if that is indeed the issue?

                                  There is nothing in the power settings in Plasma that I see that would shut off USB devices on battery. There are a couple of other possible culprits.

                                  1. Do you have tlp installed? You can check in the Software Center.
                                  2. Did you ever confirm if there was a setting in EFI / BIOS that might be setting USB ports to unpowered on battery?

                                      TraceyC I'll check BIOS shortly. I've not messed with the bios since I installed Solus when I got the laptop a few years back.

                                      I did have tlp installed on this laptop and I just uninstalled it to test. The other Dell laptop does not have tlp installed that I am aware of.

                                        TraceyC Nothing in the BIOS that looked offensive..

                                        Uninstalling tlp seems to have fixed it. I unplugged the AC adapter about 5 min ago and so far I still have all my USB devices working (this is the Lenovo Ideapad 3 all AMD).

                                        I'm going to have my friend let me anydesk in later to see if he has tlp installed on his Dell.

                                            There is a fix for that I think I read when searching the net.
