Heya folks! We’re switching things up and syncing on Thursday this week. This is to allow more time and testing for OpenSSL 3 to land for the next sync. 👀 🔒

We’re still working hard on getting our documentation updated for working with GitHub. Hopefully it shouldn’t be too much longer. Some of you awesome contributors have already figured the process out yourself!

This week brings the new 10.8 version of Budgie Desktop to Solus! The folks over at Buddies of Budgie spent a lot of time on this update. If you haven’t, check out the 10.8 blog post here. The default font for window titles has also been changed to Noto Sans Bold.

The Plasma stack has also been updated this cycle. KDE Frameworks is now at 5.109.0, Plasma at 5.27.7, and KDE Gear is at 23.04.3. Qt5 has also received a few bug fixes courtesy of the KDE team.

Other updates this week include:

  • Nextcloud
  • Podofo
  • Calibre
  • screen
  • menulibre
  • Brave
  • Signal Desktop
  • gpodder
  • platformio
  • PipeWire
  • Python modules
  • inetutils (ping and a few other tools)
  • Fixed an issue where systemd NFS mounts would fail
  • 3rd Party software

That’s all for this week. We’ll see you here for the next one!

How did the sync go for you?

This poll has ended.

Known Issues

  • Issue: Some tray icons on Budgie Desktop incorrectly show missing icon
Status: Under discussion by the Buddies of Budgie organization. Issue occurs because AppIndicators support paths to images, but the Status Notifier spec does not.

I would like to report to the Solus team that I performed this update and my inferior Budgie 10.7 was replaced with Budgie 10.8. I now have a proper functioning system tray with a modern standard. Please send help or relay to Budgie devs, thanks.

JoshStrobl I'll get right on that. We can't have good, functioning goodies now, can we? Top priority to break it 😛

    "great thanks for asking"
all smooth. love the 10.8 it has a nice green (magic) thing going on.
@EbonJaeger network manager applet is gone now in raven. nice.
@JoshStrobl if new sys tray is awesome I will see about ditching plank.

exciting. thank you hardworking solus team

brent network manager applet is gone

yep, i don't see it anymore, is it a feature or a bug?

Just did a hotfix to fix the network applet in Budgie, update and log out and back in to fix it.

ReillyBrogan I can't see any update, I'll be waiting it's not so urgent though.
Edit: it seems to me that the updated package is not indexed as the regular update including --reinstall does not install the package with the hotfix, manually installing the package with the correct link: "https://cdn.getsol.us/repo//shannon/n/network-manager-applet/network-manager-applet-1.32.0-51-1-x86_64.eopkg" works great and the problem is fixed now.

Update again, its there now for realsies 😛

          Please add option:
There was no problem and I cannot fix it ( please DO NOT post below! ) 🙂
          thx

Hi JoshStrobl , I just wrote on Element Budgie support channel problems I have seen after update.
          Hope it helps.

I have TeamViewer installed which I use for work, after updating when it launches the system UI (Budgie) crashes and asks the user to log out.

When you log back in the same happens.

This happens on both of my machines.

          Thanks.

            Very smooth update, thx
Green is the new blue, ok, which gtk-theme shall i use, to match the budgie-theme?
Not a problem at all, but i like it a bit self-consistent.

another worry-free update, congratulations to all of you Solus team.
Solus is moving fast and well 🙂

Everything fine, the only minor issue I'm seeing is some weird padding in the dual battery. Seems to be related to the default theme Plata, as with Material it doesn't look that bad. This was not the case in 10.7 though.

Love the new built-in theme, everything smooth as always, big thanks for all the team!

92 Solus updates (191.75 MiB) processed this morning for another very good result.
It's the new Budgie 10.8 desktop release that's making the news this week.
Among the new features detailed on the Buddies Of Budgie website, what I really enjoy was seeing all the menus translated into my mother language (for me, French).
If you get used to English quite easily because of its dominant position in the world, this new feature in Solus is a real plus. Many thanks to the teams of developers involved for their hard work in making Solus a distribution that counts, what a long way we've come since April this year...
One comment though: @EbonJaeger had published a post on April 25 to suggest installing the budgie-user-indicator-redux-applet for users who prefer a more classic approach over the user-indicator applet.
However, there is now a difference between the 2, as shown in the attached screenshots:

The problem is that the applet budgie-user-indicator-redux-applet contains spelling mistakes. Is it possible to align it with the content of the user-indicator applet or is it not easier finally to give up the budgie-user-indicator-redux-applet and replace it now by the user-indicator applet?

Thank you in advance for your feedback.

I've found an issue with the new Budgie that probably won't matter to most folks, but I thought I'd mention it.

I maintain a set of VMs for all four current Solus editions, plus Xfce. They're useful for confirming reported problems, and for providing screen captures to help answer questions for new users. So that I can quickly return them to a known condition when I start one, I've enabled all of them to hibernate.

Thus, they can be shut down when I don't need them, but quickly return to a useful state when I start one of them. Each VM has 4 GB of RAM, and is installed on a virtual hard drive that includes a 6 GiB swap partition.

After installing this last update and rebooting, I was curious about the new Budgie version. In the VM's four desktops, I started a terminal, Nemo, Firefox, and the Budgie desktop settings. After exploring a bit, I told the system to hibernate. But when I launched the VM again, that previous session was not present. The desktops were all empty, and of course, none of those applications was running.

I have no idea whether the session wasn't copied to swap before the VM was shut down, or it couldn't be restored from swap when it was restarted. I just know that hibernating didn't work. As I said in the beginning, this "problem" probably won't affect many people at all. But all my other Solus VMs hibernate and restore as they should (and so did Budgie), so something's definitely not working with my new Budgie VM.
