Hello Solus users,

This is a heads up for those of you who are currently testing the in-development Solus Xfce4 packages.

I'm currently in the middle of tweaking how we deliver configuration settings for the xfce4 packages (stateless configurations under /usr/share/defaults/ instead of in /etc/), so certain things like user settings could potentially change on you with zero warning, until I'm finished plumbing in the stateless configuration patches that I am presently working on.

That said, there are some exciting changes on that front to match how things are done with desktop spins; things I'm sure you will enjoy for the upcoming Xfce edition.

Stay tuned,

brent has been a while re: xfce update, I agree

My Xfce VM gets updated every week, but I can't say for sure what's actually Xfce, and what's the GNOME stack getting upgraded. Subjectively, I can say that it's seemed to work well ever since I installed it. Perhaps there's Solus branding and such yet to be done, but the functionality seems to be there.

WetGeek I look forward to moving it in next to budgie, in the future. thanks for that info. is that big rat/mouse thing still the wallpaper?

hey man that default wallpaper rat thing always give me the heebyjeebies. hoping Zach can swap it out with a zebra or a parrot or something cool like that.

It wouldn't need to, any longer than it takes you to select something else. This one still has the little mascot, but I like it.

And solid and custom colors, and gradients will be options, too.

WetGeek now that's nice right there. more flowers than mouse. THat looks classy, btw.

It's part of their stock selection -- called "Leaves." I tried setting the background to plain Microsoft "money green," like the background on my Plasma laptop, but although I could create the custom color, I couldn't set it. I'm sure that will work by release time. Or maybe I just did something wrong. I believe I did set a purple (or plum?) horizontal gradient a while ago, and that did work.

WetGeek I've used it enough times elsewheres to have a good idea of what its' menu and settings stuff apps uniquely look like. It's all familiar like Cinnamon is familiar and Mate is familiar...that old tried and true makes XFCE such a good swap for MATE. Have no doubt it will be as bulletproof as Mate.

I don't know if Solus will sell it like 'for older hardware' like most distros sold Mate including us. It's the default DE in a lot of isos and a few distros last time I used them..
..I'm real excited at this addition to the Solus family....I just instinctively know Solus will have their own vision of the DE. The tulips and holly were a great first impression (I'm not a florist).

I hope not. It's like selling Plasma as "a DE for the tinkerers." I'm about as personally invested in Plasma as anyone can be, and I don't consider myself a tinkerer. After a brief run through the settings when I install a Plasma system, I can let it take care of itself from that time onward. But when I want to do something -- like fractional video scaling to make it more comfortable to use my computer -- Plasma lets me do it quite easily.

Yes, let's encourage the team to be less pejorative with their discriptions this next time around.

WetGeek Hey WG, I couldn't find the thread where we discussed Hibernating, and at the risk of going off-topic here, thank you. shut it down that way last night. forgot. came home from work, rebooted, whammo all pages intact, everything identical. I was wondering why I had a lock screen instead of Greeter then my light bulb went off. I can't believe I never tried it. LOVE IT.

I'm glad to hear that you tried it. I had never tried it until about a year ago, either. Now I wouldn't consider leaving a computer running all night, except for my server. Like I said, it almost seems like magic.
