  • like two see an Patheon Edition, deepin edition, or UKUI edition of new Solus?

I am think of these might be possible good replacements for MATE Editon or XFCE Edition, since I think Pantheon or

deepin editions might be more well liked for some linux users.

I like the pantheon edition, which are not in solus yet that I know of. it's kind of like gnome or mac os in style I would

say. also, I sort of like deepin.

if any of these DEs that I named here can be installed with eopkg install can you give me the terminal command for solus 4.4 that would install them in either plasma or gnome editions?

for these ones if they are in solus eopkg package system? but I am guessing UKUI DE is not in solus, since its a more rara

unknown desktop environment, compared to Plasma, gnome, and budgie which are more in a lot of Linux distro's.

in bing.com search for "which Linux distro's have Pantheon?" or I used something like that to bring up the text below,

The obvious choice for Pantheon is elementaryOS. It’s easily the best and most complete implementation of Pantheon.

The theme looks great, locking and screensavers work well, and it all melds together into one nice-looking finished

product. There are also versions of Pantheon available for stock Ubuntu, Arch, and Fedora.

in bing.com search for "which linux distro's have deepin?" and pulls up this text below,

The Linux distros offering the Deepin desktop are Archlinux, Manjaro, Ubuntu, Gentoo, Fedora, Puppy Linux,

SparkyLinux, Antergos, Pardus, and openSuse. Each one has its own flavor linked to the characteristics of the host

distribution.

here, some web links I have to share again, Details has my comments or thoughts on/or about deepin, marked it as spoiler

some of deepin are not stable while others are, but I am not sure which.

ones are still unstable. there was one De would not recommend. I remember it had a curser waiting animation, and

was very unstable, might have found it called name it's called " Ubuntu Kylin "

I can't recommend it since its very unstable. its desktop environment is called "UKUI", I liked the look of its

desktop, but on my pc, it was very unstable and unresponsive, it made old versions of windows look good, again it

looked nice, it just didn't perform well. when I had tried it about a year ago.

Would you like to see Solus add more DEs than Gnome, Mate, XFce, and plasma?

This poll has ended.

RobertsGhostBusterFan these might be possible good replacements for MATE Editon or XFCE Edition, since I think Pantheon or deepin editions might be more well liked for some linux users.

To be clear the decision has been made, XFCE will replace MATE and we are not considering any other editions at this time. But polls are fun, enjoy.

ok thanks, I tried to edit by post, but it will not allow me I wanted to edit the part below details, and right before the links I provided, this is what I was trying to correct. but thanks to letting me know that a decision was made that XFCE would replace MATE. Again below is what I wanted to edit above and its been I been locked from editing it, I was trying to make one last correction.

I can't recommend the ubuntu Kylin Distro since its very unstable. its desktop environment is called "UKUI", I liked the

look of its desktop, but on my pc, it was very unstable and unresponsive, it made old versions of windows look good,

again it looked nice, it just didn't perform well. when I had tried it about a year ago.

but is it possible to install UKUI, deepin or Pantheon with "sudo eopkg install desktop.ukui or desktop.deepin or desktop.patheon, within a installed solus 4.4 edition, was wondering if solus has any of these in its package system" I am not currently in a linux environment, but I will check on it myself later. just wanted to ask if they exist in solus, and if so are any of them unstable at this time? before I go and try to install any of them on solus?

      Harvey

      ok thanks for telling me,

I recalled what I liked about ubuntu kylin, it had an animated wait curser effects on the mouse icon. well, that's about it and the look of its desktop I liked its looks, but for whatever reason it wasn't stable compared to the normal ubuntu and kubuntu that I used before. its UKUI DE most of been badly made. otherwise, I don't know why that one didn't work well. Ubuntu Kylin is a Linux distro that is designed for Chinese users from what I read, but it had English in it like the normal ubuntu edition, I don't know if their hardware is that much different than ours hardware here, I don't think that's the reason it was unstable but could that of been the reason again, I think I tested out a stable iso of it.

I tried an iso from here, I trusted that cdimage.ubuntu.com was a safer website to download it from, since I think their builds are better since the official ubuntu can be download from cdimage.ubuntu.com too.

      https://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntukylin/releases/23.04/release/

and not its main website at
      https://www.ubuntukylin.com/index.php?lang=en

I don't know if anyone here has ever also tried yet, if so, was it stable for anyone else? besides it not being stable for me.

it's possible to install UKUI on other linux distros, I found it here. it might be more stable on fedora, debian or arch linux. I don't know if anyone got the github version working on solus yet by using compile and developement method of install stuff like gentoo does? it might be possible to install that version on solus if it's not the repo but I haven't tried that yet. I still need to read the readme file at github for it, but I don't know yet if solus will work with it, or if it would be stable or not on it.

two more links on it below,

      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UKUI_(desktop_environment)

      https://github.com/ukui/ukui-desktop-environment
https://www.ukui.org/ its main website, that github lists.

and this is the English link page for that site, https://www.ukui.org/index.php?lang=en

its most likely not needed but I made a fork at github site, I added that English link to my fork.

      https://github.com/RobertsGhostBusterFan/ukui-desktop-environment

I only can read in English so I more likely prefer that website for information, not sure why github site for ukui being in English doesn't provide the English link with lang=en on its text page that is in English? I guess it's easy to get to the English button on that site, which might be their reasoning.

it uses these methos below from its text on the github website.

info on what it supports from github for installing it, on first details tab, supports debian, ubuntu, arch and fedora for install info from github website.

Below is details on UKUI Details tab below

UKUI is a desktop environment that was originally developed for Ubuntu Kylin, a Linux distribution that is one of Ubuntu’s official flavors. UKUI is a fork of the MATE Desktop Environment, and it is written using the Qt framework. It has a visual appearance similar to Windows 7, and it is designed to be lightweight and user-friendly1

Some Linux distributions that have the UKUI Desktop Environment in them are:

Ubuntu Kylin: This is the main distribution that uses UKUI as its default desktop environment. It is tailored for Chinese users, but it also supports other languages. It aims to provide a smooth and elegant user experience, and it integrates some Chinese-specific applications and features2

SparkyLinux: This is a Debian-based distribution that offers various desktop environments, including UKUI. It is designed to be fast, lightweight, and customizable. It also provides a special edition for older computers called SparkyLinux Oldstable3

Debian: This is one of the oldest and most influential Linux distributions, and it supports many desktop environments, including UKUI. It is known for its stability, security, and versatility. It also serves as the base for many other Linux distributions, such as Ubuntu and SparkyLinux.

Arch Linux: This is a Linux distribution that follows the principle of simplicity and user-centricity. It allows users to build their own system from scratch, and it supports many desktop environments, including UKUI. It is also known for its rolling-release model, which means that it always provides the latest software versions.

Fedora: This is a Linux distribution that is sponsored by Red Hat, and it focuses on innovation and community collaboration. It supports many desktop environments, including UKUI. It also provides various editions for different purposes, such as Fedora Workstation, Fedora Server, and Fedora IoT.

openEuler: This is a Linux distribution that is developed by Huawei, and it aims to provide an open-source platform for enterprise applications. It supports many desktop environments, including UKUI. It also features some Huawei-specific technologies, such as Kunpeng processors and iSulad containers.

These are some of the Linux distributions that have the UKUI Desktop Environment in them, but there may be others as well. You can also install UKUI on any Linux distribution that supports it by following the instructions on the UKUI GitHub page. I hope this information helps you find the Linux distribution that suits your needs and preferences. 😊

UKUI is a fork of the MATE Desktop Environment. yes, you said XFCE is going to replace MATE you most likely wouldn't.

want UKUI anyway from its Wikipedia page, is where I found out its a fork of MATE, nowhere else on the web, have I

seen it saying it's a MATE fork, but I am guessing that information is correct from that page.

I don't think you will get the Pantheon desktop any time soon.
      https://dev.getsol.us/T2500

Now, the other point in the new policy is avoiding full desktop environments, and increasing stack complexity. We do have some
Pantheon software in our repos, but they're very slow to adapt to upstream changes. We had this before with vte and had to carry
it until elementary fixed it with a new release, as they're tied to the Ubuntu versions.

Solus had some Pantheon software back in the day, and an unofficial repo even provided with the whole desktop environment to install, but it was too complex to provide support for it. The elementary DE is often seen as an exclusivity for a good reason. And yes, I know it is available on Arch for example, but I think they expect you to be prepared for such issues by yourself instead of actually making sure you will get a full stable DE implementation.

And, I think you missed one of the key point why Mate is being replaced by XFCE.

      • Wayland support/Development.

UKUI seems to not really actively work on it, from the tons of issues displayed on their forums, with memory leaks and incompatibilities.

And, I think you missed one of the key point why Mate is being replaced by XFCE.

        Wayland support/Development.

I hope your not saying their going to add wayland into the x server login, it doesn't like nvidia proper drivers, the non

free ones the linux drivers made by nvidia.com.

I used wayland in fedora and opensuse, with the nvidia drivers installed from their package sources, with the secure

        boot signed driver thing,

During the X11 gnome login and the X11 Plasma login it worked fine, but the Wayland login for Gnome and Plasma, the

plasma start like menu it had ghosting between and on launching icons for apps, click on the below > for more Details

        on this topic.

just moving the mouse around within Wayland while using

the non free Nvidia drivers caused screen ghosting like effect, the effect was only seen in that mode, the Nvidia drivers

work correctly for X11 only from my experience. the only time the Nvidia drivers worked for Wayland is if your using the

open source free Nvidia drivers seem to be fine with Wayland and not the non free Nvidia drivers.

anyway I hope that XFCE replacement is going to be Wayland free or has the

X11 login for it, if your going to use the Nvidia drivers on any system, this problem seemed to effect Nvidia RTX based

3D cards, but not the laptop 3D card. again if you want more details click on this below > for more Details on this topic.

it might be a problem that effects a few Nvidia 3D cards but not all of them, some

do work .also some ghosting or screen glitching can be seen in Wayland in the terminal app.

fine for Wayland but not all of them. I think this problem is in all Linux distro's not working well with NVidia drivers and Wayland since the problem seems to of never been fixed, but I could be wrong. seems to effect NVidia RTX 20 based 3D cards.

Wayland is the default for Plasma and GNOME. It will be the default for XFCE when their Wayland story is ready, and it will be the only option for Budgie Desktop once us folks over at Buddies of Budgie implement our wlroots-based compositor.

Using X11 should be viewed as living on borrowed time. If you have issues on Wayland sessions. you should file bugs with the respective projects so they can look into it. Eventually the X11 server will be deprecated and you'll be left with Wayland and maybe XWayland.

Either way, the original topic has already been addressed. We have no plans on supporting any other desktop environments.
