Framework 16" Laptop, AMD, and Solus

ReillyBrogan Yep, I'm running a Framework 13, but mine is a 12th gen Intel. @pacer That error you're getting looks to me like it's specific to AMD machines. I plan to get the AMD board for mine as soon as I can afford it, which will give us a better way to test this. No idea when that will happen, though.

Reilly, does the linked framework forum post give you any insights as far as kernel enablement for these AMD systems?

ReillyBrogan Coming from a 15" the size is noticeably more cramped. That said, I use both side by side so I bet if I went FW fully I would get used to it. I like it a lot though. I cant believe how fast booting is with Solus, it's practically instantaneous. Just over 11s from cold start.

sheepman4267 I think so because the AMD chip is so new, late last year I think. Plus FW has more support for distros outside of Fedora/Ubuntu on Intel. I read people having to run Mint Edge because regular Mint was having problems.

I also get errors when booting with the Ethernet card like that forum post. Booting without Eth card removes all those errors.

Bhibb I went with Budgie. I like the look of it a lot. And I agree, it's new hardware and a small community but things will get better as time goes on and hopefully we'll get to the point of smooth sailing pretty soon. It's cool to have devs that want to make it work

I've got my machine and Solus KDE just works amazing on it. I'm surprised every time how stable and sane Solus is in comparision to other distros. I'm also running Kinoite on this machine, because playing with immutable distros is a lot of fun (PS can't wait 'til SerpentOS!).

Here's my setup if anyone is curious:

Ryzen 9
7700s dGPU
32GB RAM
2 TB SSD 2280 (with room for a 2230)
2 LED matrix panels (looking forward to scripting them to show some valuable info)

I'm running Solus KDE (BTRFS), Kinoite (BTRFS), and Windows 11 (NTFS3) with a shared /home partition also BTRFS. I know Windows has the ability to read BTRFS with some help, so I'm looking forward to giving that a try, but I haven't really booted into it since I installed it. I'm super surprised how good this machine is at gaming under Solus.

I am considering the Framework as an upgrade to a 2016 Asus ROG 16 inch. I am reading about a number of issues that to be fair... are not surprising for a new product from a young company. One possible deal-breaker for me is that the 180 watt USB power brick does not seem capable of fully satisfying demand, resulting in battery drain while running demanding workloads, at around 10 to 15% per hour.
This could possibly be worked around with 240 watt USB power bricks under development, but its concerning for a premium product whose main selling points are to some degree theoretical at this point.
It would be interesting to see what ends up being your experience.

Of course, we could end up with 240 watt bricks and a significantly more efficient GPU, making this all moot.... Eventually.

tannji I think the power draw issue is overblown a bit. Honestly, when I'm doing a demanding task (mostly gaming) the laptop battery doesn't degrade charge noticeably for me, but my gaming sessions are around 2-3 hours at a time. I have seen no evidence of 10-15% battery drain under load, and I think it will matter what you're doing. The 180W is sufficient, IMO.

I have seen incidents with greater... but last night I also saw a claim that Framework acknowledged the issue and suggested a return for rework or replacement. Either way, reassuring.

I am no programmer by any means so who am I to complain but they have been taking forever to patch LogoFail which is pretty brutal from what I read. I think the CVE got announced last year. Hopefully next week it's released.

They said on their 3.03b update thread that they have the next update and it's passing internal validation for one or two challenges they had (I think around bios password being reset in an earlier test).

They have said the next non-beta firmware should be released in a few weeks and will include the resolution for logofail

@ReillyBrogan A new bios was released for the FW, they only give instructions for Ubuntu and Fedora using LVFS. Would the steps be the same for Solus?

I'm a framework 13 AMD owner and have upgraded to the 3.03b firmware. The instructions are the same/similar using fwupdmgr. It was super simple and easy.

rav101 Nice, too bad I'm not a coder. People have been asking about Coreboot for a while, I hope they can get it done. I think someone has been trying to do it as a passion project. Don't know what came of it. Last I heard Coreboot hasn't been able to be used on AMD though
