Staudey Having many examples to check for inspiration as good for both devs and users. We don't want to have the rarest DE, we want to have the best.
There are plenty of rare DEs take Pantheon for one of the known ones.
I simply find Cinnamon to come closest to Mate whilst being updated and also having some of the same functions as Gnome / KDE plasma even in their approach to applets...
This is from Liya by the way which seems to be in uptrend. Quite close to Mate as far as I can see especially modern day Mate...
But I think people would love an easy desktop combined with the overall speediness and ease of use from Solus.
There is a point in xfce has a roadmap for Wayland and they are not afraid to share it with the public. But those of us who remember the transition form gtk2, will know that painfully slow is the trademark of xfce.
Finally there must have been a reason for not choosing Xfce over Mate in the past. That reason most likely still exists today since xfce adhere to evolution at a pace as slow as humanly possible.
