Hello everyone, hope you're having a nice day.
What are your ideas on creating Solus Cinnamon edition?
Well, I'm a long time solus budgie user, but due to recent updates not coming, i switched to Arch linux, which i had cinnamon as its default, but now want to return back to solus, but have no cinnamon DE, what are your ideas on that? [this might be the inappropriate time to start this thread, since solus recently started stabilizing repos]

We have no plans to increase our number of editions at this time.

hisham_6c5 there's also nothing stopping you come compiling and installing the DE and needed components yourself. Beyond my skill level, as I tried for LXQt and didn't get too far.

But wouldn't it be good to have a cinnamon edition by default, budgie is way better than cinnamon, due to many reasons such as fast development and wayland support near the future, but cinnamon is good.

hisham_6c5 When Solus went away I settled for Fedora Budgie. When Solus Budgie came back I went back to Solus Budgie and swtched over to Fedora Cinnamon as my #2. It's quite lovely as you know. I got the best of both worlds now and use both. Eazy-peazy. What's wrong with a plan like that?

Just for clarity. Whilst in theory if a dedicated maintainer came forward to look after a spin that'll be dandy but it's looking like the wayland support for cinnamon is a seriously lacking and the death of X11 is actually coming before long.

It should also be considered that Solus has just crossed an area of turbulence. Some of which predicted the end of this Linux distribution and it must be admitted that it was necessary to determination so as not to leave the ship, I did not regret this decision.
Today, while Solus sees his future in short, medium and long term with an overhaul of his mode of organization, both human and technical, and as @Harvey mentioned in this post, it is better to keep the four existing desktops, and stick to the road plan defined by the team.
The creation of an ISO v 4.4 image will be crucial, if only in terms of visibility seen from the outside (I am especially thinking of Distrowatch).
If you really want the Cinnamon desktop, you might as well use the original created by Linux Mint. But you can also follow @brent 's suggestion above.

brent Fedora Cinnamon has been nothing but a headache and trouble for me anytime I install it. Hopefully Wayland support gets better now that the Mint team has finished their newest releases.

I think a Cinnamon edition could be viable in the future, but the team would be spread too thin right now if we tried to support it. I think it sort of fills the same niche that is currently filled by Budgie, whereas XFCE/MATE are more in the "very-resource-constrained" category and don't really compete against Budgie/Cinnamon. If anyone is seriously interested in a Cinnamon edition then I urge you to take up packaging on Solus and show us that there exists long-term maintainer resources to KEEP maintaining Cinnamon into the future. Nobody benefits from somebody packaging it and then leaving it abandoned in the repos unmaintained and unloved.

ReillyBrogan it's interesting how you tier these DE's out.
xfce/mate are resource-constrained but I always thought XFCE much less.
Cinnamon in league with Budgie as far as niche? probably. cinnamon, too, is a handsome devil.
the biggest thing that kept me away from Cinnamon was a less-than-adequate control center, they even farmed out some stuff to a 3rd party like Mate does with Compiz and it's just a too many chefs--a problem that Budgie does not have. XFCE requires an extra settings app too I forget.

With Budgie at least the settings are 2-fold and distinct in their missions. I was as never confused in Budgie as I was in cinnamon, xfce, or mate as far as scattered settings.

ReillyBrogan Nobody benefits from somebody packaging it and then leaving it abandoned in the repos unmaintained and unloved.

pretty much this. I'm afraid to ask how many times this happens--seems like a best intentions thing. I could not see Solus dedicating its energy to Cinnamon w/out the resources for sure. It does have a following and I generally enjoyed using it once upon a time.

depends on what the team wants to attract. Plasma has a wide and devout following. Budgie's keeps increasing.
I often speculate in my head (I'm weird) about Gnome's staying power vs. mate/xfce. I feel like gnome will be there forever but I'm not sure. Everything revolutionary started with Gnome...
...big distros offer every flavor that is for sure and the WM flavors are widening too.

Is the measure of a good distro how it caters to as many DE enthusiasts as possible?
Maybe in one sense. Not in mine.
Solus always plays it pretty smart--do a few things really well and better than anybody else. Solus versions of its 4 DE's are usually very highly praised.

I've auditioned other distros where Budgie was unrecognizable with just a wrecking ball of an interpretation of it.

ok just worked 12.5 hours and rambling with no dinner. peace.

ReillyBrogan I think it sort of fills the same niche that is currently filled by Budgie

I think of Cinnamon as Budgie's fatter brother
