Installing MATE

I'm trying to create a VM of Solus MATE. The 4.3 ISO requires a password that I haven't been able to guess. The 4.2 ISO fills the VirtualBox installer window completely, and doesn't allow me to access the [Next] button.

With the VirtualBox version 6, I was able to create a VM using the 4.2 ISO, but with version 7 I can no longer do that. Does anyone know the secret password that will allow me to use the 4.3 ISO? Thanks!

WetGeek The 4.3 MATE ISO always was borked for Virtualbox IIRC (password is empty for the live environment)
4.2 should work though, maybe play with the display settings a bit?

Nope, tried that. I'm going to see if there's any way to make the VB window bigger so I can get to the [Next] button. I was able to get it to work with the older VB - I could expose just a sliver of that button, but it was enough.

With the older VirtualBox I could make it work with 4.2, but not with VB 7.

Got it! Probably no one's really interested, so I won't go into all the details, but I started by changing from VBoxSVGA to the older VMSVGA virtual video card. Then I was again able to shift the installer window to the left enough to access the [Next] button and complete the installation.

After the installation was complete, I changed back to the VBoxSVGA support. Then after a lot of fussing with the settings in the Control Center, I was able to get MATE to full-screen, and the rest was easy.

Now it's fullly updated, and ready for some basic configuration. Just one more Solus edition to go, but that's Plasma, so it will be easy.

WetGeek be curious your thoughts about it after a couple days use. It's sleek and plain but I never had a single problem in Mate. It's stability over all other DE's speaks for itself.

Never had an operational issue with it so far but I never tried to make it do everything under the sun either
mostly everyday normal usage.
It just chugs along would recommend it as one the tops for stabillity.
Never any issues after updates either.

I didn't mean to give anyone the idea that I was changing to MATE for a daily driver. I use Plasma for that, and nothing else comes close, IMHO. But I maintain a VM of each Solus edition in order to see whether I can reproduce reported problems, or to create screen captures to help answer questions about how to do something.

If I launch a VM and then take screen shots of it from Spectacle on the host machine, it's easy to get images of things that I otherwise couldn't document -- like a drop-down that would disappear if I clicked the mouse on the VM. Or even just an image showing the VM's mouse pointing to a menu item.

I changed to a different laptop after Solus came back online, so I've needed to re-create those VMs on this one.

WetGeek You did not give me the wrong impression that you were using it for a daily driver. I did get the impression you were checking it out. Either way neither is right, I forgot you kept the DE's handy for bug-type stuff.
