brent I have a 5/8ths and 3/4" steel drill bits...you are just saying a couple strategic large bore holes will do the trick?
I use a 1/4" drill and 3-4 holes. A couple of holes with the drill sizes you mention should do the trick.
I had a dozen to get rid of at the railroad when I switched over to SSD's, and I ran them through a metal band saw. Fun (in a bad boy sort of way) and I impressed all my railroad friends, as in "What the h*ll are you doing now, Scharbach?"
I thought about running one through our industrial-strength wood chipper just to see what would happen, but that was too Fargo, even for me. 🥴
