I run Windows and Linux in parallel on four machines -- Windows desktop, Linux desktop, Windows laptop, Linux desktop. By upgrading each 3rd iCore generation, I effectively retire a computer every 6th iCore generation.
If I were running just one desktop and one laptop, I'd probably upgrade every 4th or 5th iCore generation. I never run the latest generation, staying a generation behind the newest CPU on my newest computer. I do that in part because Dell's Optiplex/Latitude business computers do that for stability/reliability (business customers abhor the bleeding edge) and in part because I buy just after a generational shift in the Optiplex/Latitude lines, saving me a bundle if I'm careful and time it right.
