Buttons on preview window of spotify have disappeared (KDE)

So, I have spotify cheerfully blasting music at me, which I'm happy with.

Now, before the polkit bug happened I used to be able to press the next, previous and pause buttons in the preview window. Now I can't for some reason. Any suggestions on how I can fix this?

First question: Has this started happening after today's fresh updates?

No, it's been the case since the polkit bug first reared its ugly head. I fugured it would be fixed with fixing the polkit bug, but no luck.

EDIT: the dbus FUNCTIONS of next/pause/play/previous seem to function just fine. KDE issue? Spotify desktop file issue?

So the "polkit bug" started with the release of Plasma 5.25, a major release in the plasma desktop (and thus the points most likely to introduce bugs). I'm confident that we've fixed the polkit bug, so my guess is that this is some other bug introduced by Plasma 5.25. For what it's worth I use Spotify from the third-party section in the software center and I do not experience any behavior like this.

I was blind. A media player button had appeared in my panel which did all of the requested and more.

FWIW I see both the dedicated applet in the system tray, but when I hover over Spotify in the task manager (IE the row of icons representing open windows) I do ALSO see album art for the current song as well as media controls. Is that second part the thing that's not showing for you? Unfortunately I can't take a screenshot of what I'm talking about because spectacle doesn't seem to capture the media controls in the preview.

BTW if you want to research this further the specific interface that audio applications use to interact with the desktop environment in a standardized way is called MPRIS. Researching with that term will help you narrow this down.
