Vivaldi-stable is normally my first choice for streaming to our TV from a small Plasma desktop. This last weekend I was disappointed when I tried to view some videos from my subscription to MotoGP, or Motorcycle Grand Prix, an international motorcycle road racing championship.
I could select one of the videos and view it, but without any audio. Without commentary, the videos aren't nearly as enjoyable as they are with it.
I tried everything I could think of to identify the problem and fix it. There was no issue with audiio if I changed the site to World Superbikes, and played a video of a recet race from there. And, of course, no problem with audio from any other site.
We use Firefox as the browser for streaming local TV stations, as providing geolocation information to a web page works with Firefox, but not with current versions of Vivaldi. (Our streaming source needs to know our location in order to stream the correct set of local stations.) So since it was readily available on the media machine, I tried using Firefox to view the race videos from last weekend, and the audio was fine. So in the worst case, we'd be able to watch those recent races using Firefox -- certainly not the end of the world.
Still curious about the rare Vivaldi failure, I decided to reinstall vivaldi-stable. Still no audio for the racing videos, but good audio with everything else. On a whim, I decided to install vivaldi-snapshot on the media machine and try that. I was able to play the racing videos with perfect audio. So now I'm going to leave "snapshot" installed on the computer in case I have any future issues with "stable." I'm pretty sure vivaldi-stable will be working correctly after the next sync.
The moral of this story is, "Don't always assume that 'stable' means 'more reliable than snapshot.'" Lesson learned.
